Hookin Chains With A Buddy In The Grass!!!

Well guys, just like the title states, this afternoon i hooked chains with a buddy of mine in his back yard. He has a late 70s F250 ford with a pretty modded up 460 BBF. He has aftermarket cam, heads, intake, carb, ignition etc. I personally have NO idea how to pull with my 6 spd against anyone and he had a HUGE advantage over me being a built auto so he got me on almost every start, if anyone has suggestions on how i can better my pulling with other trucks let me know as i felt like i could have done MUCH better. Anyway, i have about 4 videos, the first one was in normal video mode and after that my buddy accidentally switched it to compact video mode so the last 3 videos will be fairly grainy but youll get the idea.

Heres the videos, in order

Let me know what you think and PLEASE give me input on how i can better myself next time i hook up to anyone!!!

1st step... Get some pavement under those trucks :D I have seen S-10's and 1500's hook up in the dirt and neither go anywhere.. just no traction. Air down

CumminsCrazed 09-20-2008 06:59 PM

but pavement equils broken parts whereas grass is a lot more forgiving to driveline

if your scared say your scared u have a dodge though so there isnt anything to worry about ill get my 06 on here on the pavement

CumminsCrazed 09-21-2008 12:30 AM

thats fine but i also have a LOT more miles and wear on my truck than yours, i know for one my front end isnt anything like new.......

I don’t care how new your truck is or what it has for a drive line hooking like that on pavement is a quick way to break parts!

Air your ties down to 15psi or so just enough to not break off the bead. Might turn the power down a little less wheel spin = more traction you could also hold the breaks till he gets spinning the ease into it. Also hook the chain as high as you can this way you will be lifting the rear of his truck.

Good luck

The 89 has almost 400,000 on it... I always hook on pavement :D

What RPM are you dumping the clutch at?

bigdaddydiesel 09-22-2008 08:56 AM

I would say to get the RPMs up too, BEFORE you take off, that way if you have lowered the power level on the tuner, you will take off with more torque under you...
But I personally have never done it... I am too scared of the cost with my IFS:argh::ouch:

4 in the bed and 2 on the front bumper!

CumminsCrazed 09-22-2008 11:38 AM

lol i actually didnt dump it real high cuz it would just start spinning right off the bat.....i found out the lower my RPM went the more traction i got until my turbo lit again......hmmmm

Johnny Cetane 09-22-2008 11:42 AM

I'd air down a bit like said and probably dump the clutch at 1800-2000 RPM as soon as you heard go.

CumminsCrazed 09-22-2008 12:56 PM

yeah but like i said.....ive never done it before so i didnt know what to do except mash it and try to drag him lol

hold the brakes a few secs after the go sign to get the other truck time to start to spin and then it doesent take much effort to pull the other truck backwards. But you really want to have a nice soft set of tires that will wrinkle up a bit and get traction. A hard compound tire will not hook and cause the lack of traction. Hi hook point like a gooseneck and weight in the front end. With a 6 speed low4 and 2nd gear around 1400-1600 rpms good starting point. Let the CUMMINS lug abit. make all the tourqe it can with the power turned back a bit. GOOD LUCK

This all stuff you learned when jeff snatched your ass on 14? :D

He has got it dead on... Except the brake part... I feel that is cheating. But thats just me most people do it :D

CumminsCrazed 09-23-2008 12:26 PM

so would it help if i put my old worn out michelin LTX M/S tires back on it?

nmlakerat 09-23-2008 01:19 PM

not in the dirt anyway

CumminsCrazed 09-23-2008 01:26 PM

lol ok

Marine 09-23-2008 01:45 PM

It didn't look like his tires were spinning- yours were. You lost traction. That's all.

CumminsCrazed 09-23-2008 04:46 PM

yeah....too much power with these damn trucks plus open diffs...
