Bringing it home

1 Attachment(s)
Winched it up on the trailer . Tires still held air suprisingly.

Believe it or not I changed engine oil with the truck on the trailer threw a battery in it and drove it off. Started up in less than 10 seconds of cranking after 11 Years !

Cleaning up the cab

10 Attachment(s)
Boy was it a mess in the cab. Doors had been leaking for a long time and i could tell the carpet was damp but when i pulled it out it was worse than what i was expecting. Nevertheless I ended up cutting the floor out and patching it up . Cant say Im too pleased with the outcome but it was my first attempt at something like this . I will probably end up redoing it or finding another cab but more on that later

Cab floor mess

Continuing the work on the driver side . It was definitely the worst side of the cab.

New fender and tires

4 Attachment(s)
Front fender was rusted pretty bad on the bottom so i ended up changing it for an aftermarket fender. (questionable fit and quality) Also tested a tire from a friend but really didnt like the style so i kept looking around for something else.

Cleaning up the exterior

2 Attachment(s)
Took off the trim as a lot of it was basically falling it off already . The box is actually not the original but it is a factory replacement . the trim by the wheel well had come loose and had filled with mud causing the only actual rust area on it, which was too bad . Like a responsible truck enthusiast I bought some rims and tires before addressing any mechanical issues. Also ended up taking the windshield out as it was cracked and there was water and mildew between the layers of glass.

Front axle repair

6 Attachment(s)
The front u joints were completely shot . Most of the needle bearings had long fallen out and been replaced with mud so i began tearing it all apart . Replaced it with some fresh parts and put it back together for the time being.

Small things.

6 Attachment(s)
For most of the summer I left it like that looked around for small things like side markers and taillights. Tried installing a windshield myself and broke it it . Oops. Also made a stack for the bed and did the free pump mods.Did some cleaning and tried to hunt down some small electrical issues.

Sat still for most of the 2016-2017 winter. No time or money

Some cheap turbo upgrades

4 Attachment(s)
Tossed a hx35 12cm turbine housing on there during the summer but that was about it.

Getting Serious

4 Attachment(s)
Fast forward to winter 2017-2018 I was frustrated with trying to create a nice truck out of such a rusty foundation so at that point i said f@#k it and really decided to pull it apart. Notice how Im talented at really doing things bass ackwards.

Continuing the teardown

7 Attachment(s)
Lifting off the cab and stripping the frame . Took the axles off but left the leaf springs attached . Burned out the leaf spring bushings and sent it away to paint . That about brings me to my current progress. Things will be slower from here but hopefully i remember to keep updating this thread .

AmericanHotRodSolutions 02-05-2018 12:04 PM

I like it!!! Keep us posted. Looks like you are off to building the truck to new-ish condition again. I cant seem to part with my 1st gen club cab 4x4 gasser as I have hopes but no ambitions as you do. Good Luck!

RustyPanda 02-05-2018 01:29 PM

Continuing forward

Thanks . Hopefully you find time to work on your truck also. Things will slow down now that the pictures have caught up to my progress but I usually do something every weekend . The frame is painted but not back home yet . Roads have to clear up first. I have been stripping the engine down to hopefully throw some paint on. Im still trying to figure out what power mods I would like to add. I will add some more pictures this weekend . And maybe show things in a bit more detail .

AmericanHotRodSolutions 02-05-2018 02:02 PM

Cant wait to see and hear about your progress moving forward. My 2nd gen takes up my spare time now, still a couple years from my 1st gen project but it does run and drive. The power mods are fun!! Plenty out there for your build. What HP you shooting for? Be sure your trans is up to the task of your HP mark, its an often over looked issue.
You should fill in your signature with your truck info.

RustyPanda 02-05-2018 03:26 PM

My power goal is an honest 400 horsepower . Probably on the upper range of what my ve can handle but worth a shot maybe .I would like to throw on a small set of compounds , decent injectors and fuel pin with 3200 spring . I'm going to ditch the factory lift pump and run my fuel with a walbro gsl392 pump and bigger feed line . My truck had the a518 automatic but I've ditched it and have begun searching for a manual transmission . I know there are many benifets to an automatic but I like manuals https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...bafc5911d4.jpgThe old a518 . Works good still
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...f4b16f83f9.jpgThe miscellaneous stuff Im trying to sell with it

AmericanHotRodSolutions 02-05-2018 04:11 PM

The diesel version is an A618. Do you know ifs its a lock up unit? If it is the plug by the shift shaft that points up will be 3 pin, non lock up is 2 pin. Interested people will need this info. What area are you in?

RustyPanda 02-05-2018 05:46 PM

I thought A618 is for the 47 series transmission maybe I'm wrong though . Its a non lockup, its the factory trans and no lockup for 1992 as far as I understand . Definitely would like to upgrade to something manual . Getrag 360 would be nice because it's practically bolt in but I might put in the extra effort to get a 6 speed . I'm up in Alberta Canada by the way

AmericanHotRodSolutions 02-05-2018 08:43 PM

The A518/46RH/46RE are gas bell housings and the A618/47RH/47RE/ and 48RE are for the diesel bell housings.

RustyPanda 03-19-2018 01:13 PM

Got the frame back from paint pretty happy with how it turned out . Managed to sell the transmission so I'm happy with that also . Now I need to decide what I want to put back in there . I could go and put in a getrag or an nv4500 which would be fairly bolt in . I would like a six speed though . Also pushed in the new leaf spring bushings using a c clamp and lots of oil . Worked good https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...d41041e81a.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...681b02ec9f.jpgCleaned out the diff and put some fresh rtv on there
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...edf991ae6c.jpgDefinitely had a little bit of water in the diff at some point . You can see the discoloration on the right side . Everything in the diff looked good so I'm not too worried .

RustyPanda 03-26-2018 11:19 AM

Little bit of progress this weekend . Got the cross member and skid plate bolted in with some fresh hardware . The frame had pulled together a little bit with the crossmember being out for a while. So I reversed a clamp to push it back out . https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...28c7a204d8.jpg

Made some real progress this weekend . Got the front axle back under the frame . Pulled the hubs off the rear axle . I'm ditching the drum brakes so I pulled the backing plate off also . Cleaned out the rear diff and put fresh rtv back on . Rear pinion had lots of play but the pinion nut came off really really easy so that was fishy . Pulled the leaking pinion seal out and retorqued the pinion nut to spec out of curiosity . Suprise everything is nice and tight again so that was good.

RustyPanda 04-03-2018 11:20 AM

Got some neat stuff from the junkyard also . A Fass fuel system from a wrecked second gen . Tested it in the shop and it primes and makes pressure . Also got some k20 calipers for the disc brake swap . There is also a complete second gen with nv4500 transmission that he's parting out . The price is definetly right . https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...8a9c0e38a9.jpg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...d93fb6e200.jpg
Anyone had good experience with those ? I know it's a fairly bolt in swap but I've heard both good and bad about that transmission .

Lots of new thing going on everyone . I did end up picking up that nv4500 and was going to use it as is but that spiraled out of control as per usual. Finally got to putting some fresh discs on the rear for the swap

The nv4500 after cleaning and the truck i pulled it from . 5th gear had a tooth missing so i decided to replace that and send it . But when i was tightening on a new gear i actually broke a tooth off of third gear on the countershaft. Whoops :td: Picked up a fresh countershaft and a full rebuild kit for the transmission . Lesson learned i guess . Also bought a LuK 13 inch ceramettalic clutch kit to pair with the fresh trans . Its no south bend but hopefully it will do what I need . Also a little before and after of cleaning the motor

Resealing timing cover and oil pan . Jumped a tooth on the pump gear while i was there . And just a view inside the engine. Id say it looks pretty good.

Got the motor all put back together I would say it turned out nice. New seals all the way around .https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...418decca8b.jpg

My take on using a bigger feed line but using the stock pickup so I hopefully don't have fuel starvation issues. I want to keep the float but cut the screen out of the red cage that clips on the bottom of the pickup. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.die...2d7d650222.jpg
