2008 Toyota Tundra Diesel Dualie - 1-Ton Diesel Truck

2008 Toyota Tundra Diesel Dualie - 1-Ton Diesel Truck
http://images.dieselpowermag.com/fea..._left_view.jpgIt's been 15 years since Toyota brought the T100 (its first so-called "1-ton" truck) to the U.S. with just 150 hp under the hood. Since then, the truck evolved into the Tundra, which was considered by many to be a 9/10-ths scale model of a fullsize American pickup. Then, after years of testing our domestic market and taking over the compact truck segment with the Tacoma, the world's richest automaker decided to make the Tundra fullsize for 2007-and gave it dual rear wheels and an 8.0L Hino inline-six turbodiesel engine for the SEMA show.
Toyota Diesel Power
The massive 488-cubic-inch Hino J08E-TB turbodiesel in this Tundra is no Cummins, Duramax, or Power Stroke. It was designed for delivery trucks that haul with a GVWR of 35,000 pounds, and has a power rating of 260 hp and 585 lb-ft of torque without any modifications, which would be more than enough grunt to move the Tundra chassis along with a 20,000-pound trailer. Just like the engines in modern 1-ton diesels, the J08E-TB uses common-rail fueling, a variable-geometry turbo, an electronically controlled intake throttle, and twin EGR coolers to lower NOX emissions. Unlike the stock engines in the delivery truck applications, this one gets to breathe through a free-flowing 4.5-inch Magnaflow exhaust that reduces EGT while towing, and sweetens the sound whenever the Hino is fired up.
5-Speed and HD Axles
To deal with the torque of the large displacement diesel, the Toyota Motorsports Technical Group drastically modified the drivetrain. A heavy-duty Eaton 5-speed manual is used to transmit the massive amounts of torque from the engine back to a Meritor axle that uses "Hypoid-Generiod" gearing for strength and quiet operation, plus it can be equipped with a remote-actuated locking differential.
Custom Suspension and 24K Hitch
Support for the heavy diesel engine in the 1/2-ton Tundra frame comes from a front suspension setup with custom dual front struts with Bilstein shocks. To provide a stable home for a Reese Signature Series 24,000-pound fifth-wheel trailer hitch in the bed, a Deaver spring pack and Bilstein shocks replaced the stock Tundra rear suspension.

22.5-inch Dual Rear Wheels
To make the Tundra look like a true 1-ton truck, a 6.5-foot bed was fabricated with fenders for dual rear wheels, and 22.5x9-inch 10-lug Alcoa brushed aluminum rims were mounted at all four corners, along with large drilled brake discs up front. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin XDA 2+ Energy 295/60R22.5 tires that have strong sidewalls for towing and are designed with low-rolling resistance to maximize the dualie's mpg.
Mad Max Paint and Hand-Sewn Leather
SEMA trucks have to look good to get any attention at the annual aftermarket parts show, so the Toyota Motorsports Technical Group decided to use what it calls a "Road Warrior" exterior theme, along with a luxurious interior. The menacing look is due in large part to the Matte Charcoal Metallic paint that makes the Tundra look like it could be used to transport a SWAT team. Low-profile LED clearance lamps are recessed-mounted into the dualie fenders and the tailgate, and a set of four PIAA P-4000 Quattro driving lights are mounted on top of the cab to make sure the Tundra diesel is always seen. The exterior of the truck was also upgraded with generous helpings of diamond plate lining the entire cargo box and AMP Research powered running boards. Other exterior touches include bright satin brushed nickel on both bumpers, the grille surround, telescoping trailer mirrors with built-in turn signals, and dark brushed Tundra emblems.
The interior also had to be up to SEMA standards, so everything was wrapped in ginger leather with French stitching, a matching suede headliner was installed, and satin brushed nickel can be found on the AC controls, door handles, and other trim pieces. To complete the interior, a Kenwood touch-screen DVD player and navigation system with dual rear-seat entertainment was installed along with Kenwood speakers and amplifiers.
'09 Toyota Tundra Dualie Diesel?
So, does this mean that you'll be able to walk into a Toyota dealership later this year and drive home in a Tundra dualie with a turbodiesel under the hood? Probably not. This truck was built for SEMA to gauge customer interest in oil-burning 1-ton Toyotas here in the U.S.A., but it's far from a production vehicle. Toyota took a decade and a half to make the jump from midsize trucks to 1/2-ton pickups, so we don't expect them to jump into the diesel deep end of the fullsize truck market while the domestics are still figuring out how to meet the new EPA regulations that are going into effect. After the strict 2010 rules become law though, we won't be surprised if Toyota looks at Chevy, Dodge, and Ford and says, "Game on!"

Uncle Bubba 03-24-2008 10:48 PM

May as well get the new section ready cause this thing is mine, some day when I can afford it.

Benjamin 03-24-2008 10:49 PM

i'd for sure drive the crap out of that.....

LOGANSTANFORTH 03-27-2008 01:21 PM

i have thought about it, wait til someone builds one, 8 liters is ALOT of cubes to push ALOT of fuel and air into, it will soon dominate......

Give Me Diesel 08-16-2009 11:55 PM

screw that go american. we really need it.

Uncle Bubba 08-17-2009 01:25 AM

Toyota has more American employees then any other Auto Dealer out there.

stkdram55 08-17-2009 01:30 AM

yeah but thats not the point...still after everything is said and done the money goes over seas

Uncle Bubba 08-17-2009 01:31 AM

That's a political debate I won't touch.

stkdram55 08-17-2009 01:35 AM

ok...sounds good to me

Mr. Miyagi 08-17-2009 06:33 AM

Yeah, buy American trucks, built in Mexico, with Brazilian built powertrain, because the money ends up back here to do what? Hell, I dunno either since 2 of the 3 automakers based here are f'ing bankrupt...they have nice planes, though...

I laugh my ass off when people spout "buy American".....and use the "well the money ends up back in Japan" defense to Japanese companies building a superior product here with an American workforce.

You ever check out the Federal Trade Commission reports, and the Federal Reserve statements regarding which countries in this world are underwriting our debt so we can act like cock of the walk? You'd wish it was Japan.

And please, no rhetoric about Japan. My grandfather flew planes in the Pacific during WW2, and was in charge of training the Japanese forces to take over the Pacific radar grid when we gave them Okinawa back as part of the surrender agreement, and he drives a Honda Civic hybrid and Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with pride. If the shit is good enough for him, it's surely good enough for any of us...

How 'bout that computer you're typing away on? Or the cell phone? How 'bout the TV? Or the microwave?

It's old news....get off it already.

That truck, if Toyota ever decides to build it, will be built most likely here in the U.S., unfortunately. If it was 100% made in Japan it would be even better. I would dump my F350 in a heartbeat to get one.

dieseldocter16 08-17-2009 07:01 AM

well said Mr. Miyagi :U:
As soon as that truck hits toyota dealers my dodge is gone
:bat: 8L of whop ass and a fuller trans :choochoo:

Johnny Z 08-17-2009 08:40 AM

sidekick 08-17-2009 08:55 AM

yea but what did they do to beef up the front axle. I know they suck in the tundras now and add all that extra hp cant last. but the rear looks sweet undecided on it i like it:humm:

ben99 08-17-2009 05:45 PM

I think the truck looks pretty ugly personally, but that motor and tranny in a 2008 F450 would be one mean truck!:rocking:

jahulgan 08-18-2009 07:52 AM

My 01 F350 with 200K on it will still spin the tires and pull anything I through behind it.
I think I'll just keep driving it. Hope they upgrade the frame rails too over the 1/2ton ones.

Give Me Diesel 08-18-2009 07:11 PM

dont worry i will. But Nobody has ever seen this new tundra yet. And from what i know my uncles 08 tundra is the biggest hunk of crap i have ever seen. 2 tranny replacements, front diff rebuild, blown gasket??? he never has never took it offroading and has never towed anything. He is a caretaker at a 1800s cemetery and all he ever does is haul shovels and dirt.

And for all of you saying the money goes over there anyway, im in ap economics (college level course) we have not paid a debt to an Asian country since 911. And guess what were probably not going to. We stop buying there garbage there country will crumble. Besides all of there stuff is designed here anyway. Id rather have americans working in our factories and Americans getting rich fly billion dollar jets then seeing it go to the Asians... No matter how bad we Americans are spending it.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

besides if this goes down, all the American manufactures will be scrambling to make a motor with that much displacement. There has never been a good truck to come from there yet. If this one makes a turnaround my opinion could change. And it will most likely be built here.

AF1CUMMINS 08-20-2009 09:18 AM

Well I hate to bust ya'll's bubbles but if I'm not mistaken, Toyota dropped this concept truck last year when diesel was through the roof. I'd like to see it in a SRW setup and i'd be tickled to death to see another inline six turbo diesel on the market. HOPEFULLY that would inspire Ford and Chevy to get on the wagon. I've always been a Ford man and if I could get a Ford with an inline turbo diesel I'd send my Dodge out the door in a hurry.

K50 08-20-2009 11:34 AM

That truck was purely a concept to gauge public reaction. With surging oil prices and a faltering economy I'll bet that the idea has been all but scrapped.

And of COURSE they beefed up the frame rails- we're talking 24,000lbs GCVW+ vs what, like 15,000 if that for the half ton Tundra? This is a full blown dually.

USAFGopherMike 10-19-2009 03:57 AM

I'd love to see one tow. I had an inline six turbo in my supra. Motor was rediculously over built from the factory and could handle tons of power. An 8 litre turbo diesel from Toyota? Yeah, that'd be nasty.

dieseldean 10-19-2009 04:38 PM

American truck-Japanese truck, Who gives a :edit:?! We buy what we buy to pull our toys, etc. My Dodge was made in Mexico-likely has some Japanese parts in it. If the big 3 didn't compromise quality for quantity, this discussion wouldn't even take place. Neither Toyota, Nissan or Honda requested a MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR BAIL-OUT. When Toyota first considered the full-size pickup, they were going to put a Cat in it. Did you know that the mighty Caterpiller is assembled in Japan? (yeah...Japan) Who supplies G.M. with their current diesel platform? Isuzu heavy industries...of Japan. If Toyota offers something that will carry, and pull the kind of loads that my Dodge has to contend with, I'll go get one. If it holds up as well as my wife's Sequoia, It is money well spent.:madd:

ZTMIKE 10-24-2009 11:25 AM

Anyone got any videos of this truck running? Can't seem to find none on Youtube.

350TacoZilla 10-24-2009 06:54 PM

never seen it driving around but I tell you that its a sweet concept, sure we dont need it to be dually or have ugly orange looking interior but a 1ton toy with diesel? heck yeah.

transam86 10-31-2009 06:34 AM

That bad boy is a looker no doubt. Just seems kinda funny looking a 6 ft bed on a C/C. Like a bodybuilder that trains all upper body and dont train legs :-) Out of proportion, I guess in my eyes a full C/C should have an 8 ft, bed. But that bad boy is a looker no doubt . alottawork went into that thing Ill give them that. I seen it on pickup truck dot com at the SEMA ahow. Ita oh 2 cool looking. I can only imagine what the sticker on that truck will be if it ever makes it to production.
