Union Diesel Mechanic?

Alright guys I'm bout to graduate NADC in 2 weeks. I recently started applying for jobs and the first one I applied for within 3 hours they was calling me wanting me to work for them. I went on with the phone interview and found out it's a union job that starts at $15.10 an hour. It's at Hostess working on delivery trucks (pm-major work).

My question is: is a union a good thing to get into? I'm really dumb when it comes to them. I've heard many mixed things about unions so help me out guys. Should I take it or do I let the other applications soak for a few days?

I am a Union Member @ a Well know Truck mfg on east coast. I am not a union lover but it has good and bad sides. Bad is they cater to the weak, lazy workers.
Good is usually pay and incentives.
You know hostess is not going belly up anytime soon!

the only real bad thing about the unions are they protect the lazy people.

how do u like the school? Im thinkin about going there.

It was pretty good. Learned a lot. The instructors for the most part know their stuff. Lincoln has taken over the school so a lot of things are changing. All in all if it was still run by NADC and not lincoln I would go back but even the instructors will tell ya Lincoln is ruining the school slowly but surely. I would say get in n get out soon before they fully ruin it lol

Idk about Union mechanics but my experience with union heavy equipment operators is that 95% are lazy as is humanly possible:td: and of that 95%, 100% are over payed and under worked. :argh: But that's just me, i think people should work hard for what they get paid per hr:tu:

I graduated in 06 right when lincoln took over, I work for local cat dealer on EPG (electrical power generation) equip. we also have truck and marine divisions, in our marine and epg divisions we have about 10 techs who came from nadc with me being the youngest.

If you have a very strong electrical aptitude, try whatever you can to get into epg, it is very clean work and pays excellent.

as for UNION, try to stay private, but if you have to get a job, go for it. I mostly work with plumbers/ steam fitters and electricians, there are very few who work their ass off, they mostly sit around and do as little as possible each day with 3 or 4 guys standing around watching each 1 that works, they make the jobs last as long as possible to keep from being laid off before the next job comes along. I realize working in a shop is way different, but as a whole I feel unions are totally unneccesary, they are run by criminals (politicians). But if you like paying to have a job, more power to you.
