welding a plow cutting edge
 

i heard on a snow plow cutting edge you can add stick welds to the cutting edge to make it last longer. has anyone heard or done this if so what does it do does it work is it worth it thanks

That would be a lot of grinding to keep it sharp and the cost of the grinding wheels would offset any money savings here I would think. But ya a good stout stick welder with some thick diameter stick would make a good hard weld. Wouldn't be as hard as the original blade material since it's case hardened steel but it would work.

Way to much work to be worth while if your time is worth any amount of money to you. In my opinion anyway.

You mean like hardfacing on a bucket of a hoe or loader?

you have to use hard surface rod

HI guys i think this would be worth the time and money as a new cutting edge is way more expensive than the rods.. Did this to mine, welded a beed across the bottom edge about a half inch high it wore up to the weld and then stoped. i also weleded the bottom of the skid shoes and this also stoped the ware. BUT YOU MUST USE A ROD THAT HAS SOME NICKEL ALLOY IN IT.. i do a lot of plowing up here in the snow belt of northwest indiana and it lasted a realy long time hope this helps Thanks Guys....

a new 1/2" cutting edge for an 8 foot plow is only around 160 bucks and should last a few seasons depending on usage
