Crankshaft Barring Tool

Started pulling the tranny what a PITA! Realized I need a barring tool. Where can I get one next day? Cummins mid-south is closed on sat. now. Freightliner checked cummins mid-south stock for me and a big fat NO! Any ideas on getting one asap?
Thanks

I dunno what tool you're talking about here? I pulled my tranny without any specialty tools on my 1997. What is this tool you speak of?

i think i know what u r talking about............the tool to take the bearing out of the motor right???

when u put it in u use something like a credit card and a ruber mallet

to rotate the crankshaft enabling you to get to the torque converter bolts.
just dawned on me to turn the dampener, doesnt it have a bolt going through it?

Has 4 15mm head bolts holding it to the front of the crank. That's how I turned mine, worked just fine.

You dont really need the barring tool (although it is nice to have)...use the crankshaft pulley and turn backwards.

Thanks guys, I am heading over to the shop and going to turn it by the crank pulley. I swear if I would think things out alittle before getting all pizzed off I could of had that old trany out yesterday!

You can also spin it with the alternator pulley nut, plus you'll be topside where you can see when to stop.

Whoops Racer is correct (as per usual) - I was thinking alternator pulley and TYPING crankshaft pulley. Dont know what happened there - I was probably getting "nagged" by the ol lady.

+1 for the alternator pulley.... alot easier than the crank pulley.... just rotate it backwards like you are trying to remove the alternator nut..... the motor won't turn the other way.....

Hmm, never tried turning it that way, I always used the crank. I see how it would work though, I guess I just overestimated the compression of the diesel.

On my 1965 Chevy Impala w/ HO283 I can turn the engine by turning the fan (no clutch in 65) I just have to push on the belt a little to add extra tension, but it works.

Learn somthing new every day :)

Just use a pry bar on the ring gear. Then you dont have to climb out from under the truck all the time.
