Traction.... Bars...
 

im excited as all hell.
just ordered all the parts needed to fab up my own traction bars for the reg. cab.
2 5/8 Johnny Joints, greaseable end bushings and inserts.

going with 1.50 ID tubing

should have it done by sunday.

still trying to decide if i want to mount to the bottom of the out side of the frame rails
what would you guys do?

Sounds like a good project. I plan on building some for my truck this spring

What type of tubing and what wall thickness are you using? How long will they be?

The longer they are, the more leverage they have...thus more traction. Be sure to reinforce/box the frame rail wherever you put the front mounts. I've seen bent frames. Mounting location on the frame bottom/side isn't critical, as long as the bar doesn't contact the frame under full articulation of the rear axle. Be sure to have your welder setup properly and make sure it's going to hold. Another thing to do is to put a safety strap at the frame mount so that if the bar breaks it doesn't hit the ground and pole vault the truck. Research dragster ladder bars to get an idea of what they do for safety and strength.

1 1/2 id havent decided on the thickness just yet. but they will be stought.
i understand the concept of the bars very well. im just curious what the difference would be had/not had by mouting to the out side frame.

I don't think you'll notice any in frame mounting location since the bars are straight & parallel with eachother. I could be wrong, but I'm no engineer. I've built several sets of ladder bars for vintage hot rods & drag cars and all have been different depending on the car. How are you mounting them to the axle? Are you using Mild Steel, DOM, 4130? Be sure to post build pics and let us know the end results.:yeah:

ya im thinkin were gonna go from under the frame.

but as for at te axle just some 3/16 plate

the joints didnt come in friday. hopfully tomorrow they show.
