New to me 6.9
Hey all,
I recently purchased an 86 ford f250 6.9 diesel 4x4 with 164K miles. It has a few issues I am trying to clear up. 1. It has an aftermarket fuel filter that started leaking today on a longer trip with a water separator that bolts on next to the stock fuel filter. Is a water separator totally necessary? Replace the unit? what brands/ styles 2. It has a hard time starting if it has set for a while. I am thinking about replacing the fuel return lines. 3. Aside from changing the fuel filters and flushing coolant any other recommendations for routine maintenance or articles to read? Thanks folks |
Your starting issue could be many things have your batteries load tested, test your glow plug relay if those check out I'd say our glow plugs are bad. I'd change the oil and filter fuel filter, air filter that's just me.

Replace the unit? what brands/ styles they came with a separate water filter, it may be the stock one, they always leak ugh. i would recommend keeping one on the truck, just replace it with another style of your choice. 2. Yes I would keep the water seperator. :c:

I would suggest a fuel pump (lift pump) out back by the tank. inline cheapo parts store pump will work just fine 5-8psi or so, that will fix all the hard start problems from losing prime, and help you find ALL the leaks it may have. best upgrade ever for those trucks.
