24v

COLETRA1N 02-12-2012 09:08 PM

Boy, well
7.3 without the 4r100 :jump:
-very dependable
-you can beat on it
-gets great mileage
-lasts a long time
-dont smoke a lot
-around 300HP with custom tunes

-suck at cold starts
-dont make a lot of power without extensive mods
-HPOP failure
-ICP and IDM failure

24v without auto trans :jump:
-very dependable
-good mileage
-can beat on it
-dont know about cold starts???
-easy to work on

-smoke alot
-sound like tractors
I think there very comparable without saying what truck they are in or what trans is behind it, 7.3 has a couple more HP stock if its the later versions

The 4R is a great tranny once its built.

They start just fine if you keep working glow plugs and relay in it. Used to start mine at -40.

You don't see any hpop and idm failures

Princess
Hate to sound condescending here but I'll chance it. Your question is sort of like asking how high is up. There is no answer to it.
They are both good engines but the past uses of either would be more telling about that engine than just thinking one would be better than the other for some unknown reason. The engines are used in the same type of truck so they are similar in that respect but that is about it. I would again say that what you need depends on what you want to do with it and what you can afford. The engine is only one part of the truck. There are a lot of other expensive pieces I would be considering too in the purchase of a truck. The reason they sell all three major brands is that we all have our own preferences. What I like might not be what you like. Hence the big three in diesel form. When you buy a truck, get one based on condition and past uses and options you want and what you can afford. Don't base it from what I say when you ask a question that is not relevant to the particular deal you are making. Ask a specific question that we can help you with and we would gladly help with an answer. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks out there more than willing to bang out an answer on here.
Stay safe out there.
Ken
