Duramax vs. Powerstroke vs. Cummins
 

So I have pretty much always owned gas powered Chevys, now I'm looking to jump into diesel world, so my first thought was Duramax of course but after doing some on line shopping and seeing the prices and mileage between the GM's dodges and fords and knowing that there all good motors and all have there own problems I was wondering what everyone else was thinking, I'm looking at 3/4 tons, I do some towing nothing extreme and haul alot of crap in the bed but would like some decent mpg's as a daily driver

If your doing a lot towing and hauling the cummins is going to serve you the best in my oppinion. Im not a durmax fan and I dont know alot about them except they hate the extream cold, and towing. Plus its a Japanese engine. not much to talk much about since cummins are made in brazil and manufactured here in the USA. I do like fords because of the body and they hold out well. Powerstrokes a good engine if you get a 7.3L I dislike our 6.0L its been a lemon and its an 05 F350 Dually. We haul 10K-18K with the truck A lot. Ive heard good things about the new 6.7L Powerstrokes. Now adays if you want power out of any New diesel engine your going have to modify them and if you do so under warranty you void it. Cummins is a 500K engine if you take care of them, I have yet to see a Duramax make it to 300K alive where I live and there not very popular unless you a drag racer racin diesels. Ive seen powerstroke in the 350K range and still goin and Ive seen A LOT of cummins at the 350-400K range on the original engine. Cummins 5.9L get 20-24MPG depending how you drive and transmission. I ve heard the LBZ7 Dmax get around 20 to and so do the 1999-2003 7.3L powerstrokes and the 1994-1997 get 17-19 mpg high way. My cummins a 98.5 24 Valve stock with the exception in my signature gets 24mpg if I stay on the high way. I hauled 6700Lbs the other day and got 15 mpg out of here. So there a thought for ya this is my two cents and oppinon goood luck and Im sure there be plenty of oppinions.

You looking at new or used?

Used, probably gonna end up with something from early to mid 2000's with around 100k depending on style and options, looking at the 4 door (crew/king cab) long bed single axel.

If you go Ford I would stick with an 02 or earlier with the 7.3 PowerStroke (some 03's also). The 6.0's could be made reliable, but if you want something you can just go buy and drive, stick with the 7.3. If you're wanting a crew cab, dont even bother with the Dodge option, they didnt even get a four door truck until 03, and the cabs are still tiny. A Duramax would be a good option as well, the 01-04 LB7's had common injector problems.

I would stick with either a 7.3 PowerStroke if you're wanting an earlier truck on an 06-07 LBZ Duramax if you are wanting a later model truck.

I've always been a dodge guy but I bought a 08 duramax crew cab less then a month ago. I think I'm starting to regret it. I've noticed over bumps it makes a lot more noise. Dodge just seems way more of a solid truck. I can't handle it when going over bumps and stuff rattles in the truck. But I'm trying to like the truck because I spent 29000 on it. The reason I bought it is because I love the look of it and the duramax with the Allison transmission is a pretty good combination.

I hope it just takes me a bit of time to get use to my truck. But so far my next truck will be a cummins. I'd say if your a Chevy guy maybe just stick with what you know and like.
