09 6.4 PSD or 2nd gen 24v Ram 2500

Hi guys, I'm buying a new truck in a few weeks here and so far I'm pretty set on a 08-09 F-250 King Ranch CC with 6.4, I have 2 SDs with 7.3 at work and love the Ford cab design and build quality IMO but there is something about the 2nd gen Rams that I like and I don't think you can go wrong with a Cummins either.
Plan for 6.4 would be intake, exhaust, DPF/EGR delete and H&S tuner, that should put me at 450-500 at the wheels safely I think. What would it take to get a 24V in that range? Truck will be my daily driver so needs to be reliable and don't want to mess the driveability either.
Thanks for the time and help

Go with the 6.4

EasternAggie 04-19-2011 10:26 AM

Definately go with the 6.4. Since you're doing all the deletes including DPF and EGR, you should have a pretty reliable, powerful truck.

Its going to take quite a bit more mods to get a VP44 24v to 500hp and IMO you're gettin a lot less quality as far as the truck goes.

Keychain444 04-19-2011 06:56 PM

If your looking to make that mauch power right away go with the 6.4. I had a 24V, great truck but i had about $3,000 in it an wasn't making near the power that i am with this ford i have right now. If you go with the 6.4 i suggest h&s for your programing( EGR is shut off automatically with tuner), get a good exhaust that will delete everything and and get you some ladder bars for sure, these thing generate a ton of power.:tu:

Lange503 04-19-2011 10:21 PM

6.4 no doubt about it, easy power gains, with 1,500$ you can have an EASY 450 hp 6.4, and a 6.4 with that kind of power is way fun to drive, plus you can't beat the looks of a 6.4 with a leveling kit, wheels and tires :tu:

Avid dodge lover here.... but i'm gonna agree with ya'll.... for what u want go ford...did i just say that???:argh::argh::argh::argh::argh:

evilarv 04-19-2011 11:04 PM

Thanks for the replies guys and pretty much the 6.4 is the one that everybody agrees on, even Dodge guys :woot:
Main reason I like the 24V is sound, to me thats what a diesel should sound like, not like all these new crap that you can barely tell if its running, if you can leave it running at the drive thru its just not right...

Yeah, already had H&S picked up for the tunes, heard nothing but good things about them.
Would i need ladder bars if I don't plan on lifting it? just going to do a leveling kit.

Keychain444 04-20-2011 10:00 PM

You can run without them I am right now but I have ladder bars on the way. I am also investing in a torque converter and a HD rebuild kit. They say these trannies can handle the tunes but i just dont trust it. The power this truck makes is crazy. When im running the hot(250hp) tune from a dead stop the tires cant help themselves but to spin, they ususally stop slipping at 45mph or so. Now they have a 300hp haha so i cant wait to try this. Once you run it you will understand. Hope this helps man. :c:

I plan on running the 210 tow tune everyday, seems to be a powerful but safe tune that wont run too hot and then when the situation calls for it use the 250hp tune. 300?? damn, thats a lot! going to be fun though.
I hear the trans can take it as long as you take care of it and don't drive it like a rental though, I will upgrade the trans but will wait til the warranty is out

EasternAggie 04-20-2011 11:40 PM

I know people running 250 tunes everyday with no problems, and running a 300 or 310 tune occasionally shouldnt hurt it either. But it all depends on your driving habits, Im sure you could tear one up on just a 210 tune if you abused it hard enough.

Lange503 04-21-2011 11:19 AM

warranty is out soon as you put that H&S on it, but i have heard of guys runnin with 500 to the ground everday with stock trans and such and haven't had any issues

I will keep all the stock parts so it can go back to stock before going to dealer for warranty work, most people do that

Keychain444 04-21-2011 09:21 PM

I was just recommending it because i know my driving habits haha.... Once My foot gets in to its hard not to get out of it haha. They are really good tunes if you drive normal on it you should be fine me on the other :choochoo:.

Thanks for the replies guys, looking for a 6.4 KR as of now but let me throw you guys another idea, what do you think about an 03-05 5.9cr?

Good engine, much lower quality truck IMO. Cant beat a King Ranch Ford :tu:

Also can still hit much higher hp number on just a tune with a 6.4 vs a 5.9, even a commonrail. The only reason I would ever buy a Dodge is so I could have a stick shift :humm:

evilarv 04-23-2011 11:00 AM

I know Ford build quality is better and love the 08+ super duty but one of the main reasons I keep looking at different options is that having to take the cab off for any work in the 6.4 kind of scares me, I do most of the work myself but if cab needs to come up that means it would have to go to dealer. I like the simplicity of the 5.9 and how easy it is to work on it and overall a great engine that can be modified a lot

EasternAggie 04-24-2011 08:15 PM

that is very true. much, much easier to get to injectors/turbo/head/whatever on the I6 versus the V8

bobcat67 04-24-2011 10:18 PM

you can keep your stock parts and throw them back on there if work needs to be done, but remember, just cause you take it off doesn't make it want to go back on very easy, which is definitely the case with an egr delete, which i always recommend doing, but that is up to you, there are lots of other places that work on these trucks and pull the cabs that are not the dealerships, just need to find a decent diesel shop

I've owned 2 6.4's both 2008. Great handling, riding, and my opinion best looks in & out. But the fuel mileage sucks, still alot of lag on the low end even with the twins, and around 100k giving alot of trouble (not mine but several around where I live). Right now would be the perfect time to buy one, because they're traded in everywhere (why)? I had Cummins prior and back to Cummins now! Only my opinion!! But if you do get one I have a Spartan w/ CAT,DPF, Muffler delete 4" exhaust I'd sure like to get rid of!!!

Thats what I'm afraid of, I plan on keeping it for a long time and as much as I love the 08+ Super Duty if everytime I need to work on it have to take the cab off that will get expensive after the warranty expires.

jhart242 07-02-2011 05:29 AM

So.......what did you buy?!?!?!? I have a deep passion for the 2gen dodge. I'm a ford man through and through but the sound of a cummins makes certain things stand up.

cumminspwrram59 07-03-2011 09:39 AM

how bout a 6.7 cummins ?

I like them but they're not my favorite sounding diesel, sounds like a gasser 6 cylinder too much at the exhaust IMO. But Ill prob get one in a couple of years (and prob switch out the VGT) just for the fact that I want to keep a standard tranny and Dodge is the only one that offers one anymore :argh:

Actually I didn't buy anything, decided to wait til some of the new 6.7 Superduties put on some miles to see how the do, 2 friends work at Ford dealership and say the barely see any 6.7s in for warranty work

vcustoms86 07-21-2011 09:07 AM

I was going to suggest the 6.7 cummins since you are going to do the deletes. With all the deletes, i love mine. I do love my 24v more though. Shes simplier, sounds just right, and after i finish the VGT swap, should be a different animal. It is more expensive to get a 24v to 450-500hp but look at the new trucks. They start 330-360hp. My 24v was 190-210 out of the box. Also ,both of mine get around 20 mpgs. just my .02 :c:
