Best mods for 6.0

Hey guys im getting a 2004 6.0 f350 reg cab, and i want to do some mods that will help with fuel economy and performance. Whats the first thing i should do? The truck is stock as of now with 80,000 on it.

Hmm... lemme see if I'm learning anything yet. Your truck may have a Diesel particulate Filter. Depending on your area (some allow you to remove, some don't) you could remove it to increase your economy and performance. Check local emissions laws.

P.S. I keep thinking they went to a DPF after the 7.3, or was it only in '07 they started putting them in?

you should ask this in the ford 6.0 section. but to give you a couple suggestions...no they did not have the dpf until after the 6.0 era so thats out. first things are to address the egr valve and cooler. they get built up crap in them and cause them to fail. depending on where your at you can either buy an egr delete kit or replace the egr cooler with an aftermarket one. also get some aftermarket gauges to keep an eye on the trucks vitals. this can be done with either gauges or a programmer with a in cab monitor. i would suggest sct for the performance end and possibly the monitor as well. a bigger exhaust will also help mileage and performance. if you want to get crazy on the performance end i would also suggest headstuds to protect the head gasket.

Great post crzycummins!! thats all u need to kno on the 6.0 trust me, Dont go ANY other route then wat he has stated above, again trust me haha, ill let u hear it from me, a complete EGR Delete is a must and some gauges will help u stop something from being bad to goin worse(head gasket blown!) trust me lol, for performance wise, SCT Custom tunes is THEEE only programmer that should be made for the 6.0 (well for smart 6.0 drivers) Trust me again haha, a straight pipe aftermarket exaust for maximum airflow is ideal for performance and temp control as well plus will help mpgs, and for long run security go with arp head studs :rocking: pretty sure ull hear much of this again and again :tu: play it smart do it right the first time!! wish i would have!!

:argh:Ok lets see. You should check and see if your EGR cooler is oval or square, the oval one seem less prone to fail than the square one, your choice if you remove it or not, I just upgraded mine. But definetly check the egr valve it self as that is a weak point in all 6.0L . Most important do a good rad flush. I put in Catpillar or International coolant but that is up to you what you do.. Put on a coolant by-pass filter just to help out but dont put the ford crap back in. Now I wouldnt waste the time of doing any aftermarket air filters untill you get a 4" exhaust turbo back. cause if you take on more air you need to exhaust it. If your thinking about chipping it then your going to have do head bolts and gaskets. Make sure that your face bodys only get shaved 0.008mm just like what you do to a fly wheel when changing clutches.. There is a good kit on ebay. Your chioce of egr delete or upgrade egr comes with everything you need to get rid of most of the 6.0L problems. If you do a head upgrade make sure you check all the dumbie plugs and maybe change the o-rings out. Saves you a headache :argh: when you get hard starts. well good luck on ur project :tu:
