1986 f350 6.9 non turbo
 

Im gonna buy this truck for $3500.00 and it has a rebuilt engine with 30,000 miles on it, is that a good deal? Plus i wanna know what kind of turbo i should put on it, i have a cummins turbo but idk if thats good for this truck? Any input would be good.

so im getting a good deal... no rust starts right up, just its sluggish and i like to beat ricers alot eiather in my dada truck or my car.... point is what turbo kit is good for this truck?

I bought my 86 in very clean condition for $900 it just had a lot of general wear problems that were easily fixed.

don't expect it to be fast by any stretch of the imagination, but it won't quit on ya

well reliability is good and the fact that it a "simple" engine make me feel relaxed because no ecu=fun in my mind, but just wish i could go fast in it ya know, is banks a good turbo to look at or should i not even think of a turbo

Honestly if that's your price range, I would try and find a 1st gen cummins that already has a turbo. I think it's a better platform to start from. A few years ago i had a '86 F-250 with the 6.9L that wouldn't quit, but it was slug slow. I just would hate to see someone spend $3,500 on a non turbo truck and then dump a few more thousand into it for a turbo kit. Just my $0.02.

get a turbo diesel i owned a 6.9 idi and your looking to spend like 3500 on a tubo kit from banks just gives you like 120 hp more and puts you at like 500lbs you saave your money and find a first gen cummins 12v manual for prolly less than 3500 and just turn your pump up play with your fuel plate get some gauges and you will have a fun pretty fast truck

I agree. If you want fast just get a 1st gen Cummins. I own an 85 6.9. I've got the pump turned up just a little bit, since I still need to get a pyro gauge, but its still not fast at all. It won't die on you, that's for sure and you can pull just about anything that anybody with 500+ hp can, it'll just take you longer to get there.

That is way to much money for an IDI, unless that truck is clean enough you could eat off the chassis, I wouldn't pay more than $2500. Around here, trucks with rebuilt IDI's have gone for $900. The cummins turbo on an IDI will require plenty of fab work. The cheapest new turbo kit I have seen is about $1800, from Banks I believe. Pick any turbo you want though as they all get you the same level of power, your only real option is gated or non-gated turbo.
