buying ford or dodge? serious opinions no fights
 
Let me start, I am NOT trying to start a loyalty fight, I am going back to a diesel and need your opinions.

I need a crew cab, 8ft bed, 4x4.

I am debating to get the 2010 dodge CC, because it has the new bigger back seat, cummins is legendary, nice styling despite minumum interior ( from what I've seen/read )

a later model dodge, I don't like the tiny back seat. It will be ok now, but as the kids get bigger it will be tight back there.

A later model ford, when the 6.7 comes out im sure i can get a 6.4 @ a good price. I love the ford exterior, I love the ford interior

So here is the problem.

I love the cummins, less moving parts, historically more reliable, super long lasting ( want this truck to get 250K), I can also get a low miliage 2/3 yr old dodge & ford for 10G less then the new Dodge.

or even get a turned in 2010 ram, since i plan on doing this in sep 10.

so opinions please!

i have a 99 powerstroke with 300k on it and the only thing ive done to it is put a transfer case and a high pressure oil pump its an auto trans 4x4 and its a 4door and im not having any problems with it right now its running like a champ, im getting 17 to the gal in town.

Im just gonna throw this out there. Nowadays I dont think any diesel engine really has any less moving parts than the other, as far as I know. If youre worried about fuel mileage I wouldnt get a new truck due to the dpf killing mileage. I believe pre-2008 trucks didnt have dpfs. I would personally just drive a lot of them and see which one you like the best. but thats just my $.02.

and about any diesel truck, as long as you treat it right, will give you a ton of miles.

6.4 liter Fords and 6.7 cummins have DPFs. On a 2003 to 2009 Dodge you can get the Small Crew cab (little leg room in back seat, yet still 4 normal doors) with an 8 foot bed, or a mega cab with a standard size bed (6'3" They do not offer an 8' bed). those dpfs that there talking about you can pull em out, my bros got a 09 cummins 6speed he pulled his out, it made the turbo noise a lil louder and increased fuel by a couple miles but thats bout it,

I worked in a 4X4 shop for 8yrs. Seen both trucks many times. I personally have a F-250 7.3. I do not like any of the new diesels personally BUT if I was gonna buy one right now I would buy a Dodge. Only thing about a dodge that I do not like is their frontends go alittle quicker than Fords frontends. Balljoints and Hub assemblies are around a grand by the time you buy parts labor and alignment. But most of those trucks going through frontends alot are contractors, plow people, etc. If you are just using it as a normal truck the dodge is great. Just my 2 cents. Find a F350 with a cummins and an allison transmission :rocking: NOW your talking!!

I will be using it for work, but never plowing, or heavy front end loads. I like the 2010 cummins because the lack of urea injection. It's one less thing to do. I have to have a full back seat, I can't deal with the little dodge back seat prior to 2010. I do love the fords, the 08/09 big back seat, but the 6.4 engine is so so....

I think Im going to look for a Used 2010 Ram 3/4 ton, but I have to see and sit in the back seat first prior to buying. Or just stick with 08/09 ford and gut the DPF.

As for the DPF, I don't want to go that much older, but If i can find a good DPF free truck i might consider.

But worse case I just get a newer one and take it right out.

front ends on the dodge: how hard you use the truck depends on how long the front end will stay tight, they upgraded/fixed the problem with the trac bar the 2nd gens had other then that you have to realize its isn't a gas motor under the hood the cummins motor alone roughly weighs 1200 pounds an over time it will wear on parts, bushings, brakes, tires but you will have that with any heavy milled truck.

as for the diesel particulate filter i might be wrong but im almost sure 2007 is when they started using those on the cummins light duty trucks, cant say for sure about the fords and chevys, as i have older model 12v, 7.3, and 6.0. for what i understand they can be a real bear to work around holding back fuel efficenty and power one off the main reason the big three has upped there diesel cubic inches to 6.4s 6.7s and so on to maintain good power numbers in combination with using dpf. yes they can be removed and there are programers out there to work coincide with them but eventually they will cause problems.

my opinion and it is just that, a 2006 dodge before all the regulations on emissions controls and electrical bs. 5.9 great power, good mpg and very dependable.

i have got a cc cummins and i am very satisfied with the seating in it, i think there is plenty of room. i have two car seats cramed in the back, one forward facing and one rear facing, and there is still plenty of room for a regular sized grown man. i took my brother in law, pretty avg, 6 foot about 180-200 lbs two kids wife and sister inlaw, little taller then avg women, about avg weight (i will never know exact:humm:) upstate, about 2 and half hour drive, and it was comfortable for a truck. and it is standerd 6 spd so her legs were on the passenger side. only stoped once half way, for a potty break. the rear seats fold up and there is enough storage for emergency stuff, chains, roaps, tie downs, and ect. only draw back is to get to them you gotta rip out safty seats. there was still plenty of room in the bed for tents, food, large kids toys, bikes and typcal camping supplies. did great on fuel, drives nice, no problems yet (76000) on it. very happy. i came out of a dakota with extened cab so it was a huge improvement. i never drove a ford, but i have been in there cc's and there wasnt' a whole lot of room for a bunch of "more the avg" grown men. it was a little older 00-03. hope this helps

oh and i did manage to cram in a bass tube for the stereo behind the center consel, not a big deal right now with the car seats and kids, it might have to go when they get bigger.

I had the 05 Ram 1500, with the same seating configuration in the back, it wasn't super roomy. I am just figuring that if I am getting a new truck, get something that i can grow with, although truth be told, If i kept it till my kids were young teens, id have it 10 years and they would still fit.

I have also found a few CR 5.9 Cummins, laramie, fully loaded with great miliage, for a great price

Also was looking at the ST model 2010 Rams, they aren't bad. they look very very long, but I hate the short box. After I put a tool box in Im down to a 6 foot bed, which is good. I cant do a 4.5 ft bed.

I have found a few cummins, 6 speed ( which im still debating on ) brand new cc fo 36K
