What are some laws involving diesel trucks and smogging?

I live in california,
someone told me that they need to be smogged if its older then 2003, but i have also heard older than 1998... :s:

I really want to get a diesel with some straight pipes, no cat, and no muffler (for awhile until I get my jollys out or get pulled over for noise of something). But I want to get one ass new as possible that i can do that for.

Also, one of my buddies mentioned that some diesels are becoming illegal to drive? like they are too old and are being phased out for not meeting some guidelines.

If i could get some basic information on diesel laws so i can narrow down my search for the right truck i would be very thankful :tu:

Smog Information

keep the cat and you'll likely not run into any trouble. noise is not much louder with a straight pipe. as long as you keep your stock emission equipment and you are not blowing black smoke then any diesel truck will be fine.:choochoo:

Alright thanks for that, i guess it is older than '98 for smog.

So i've got this mindset that it has to go through a bunch of tests like my tahoe does now, being gas and all...

so the test for anything after '98 is visual?

it is visual, plug into the OBD port and look for codes and do a snap test to see how fast the smoke clears.

it is really a five minute process that some will make longer to justify their cost.

Has anyone passed the smog test with a straight pipe my truck doesn't have a Cat and I am trying to figure out if I can straight pipe my F-250 and still pass smog. Thanks.

Even without the muffler or do they even notice that the muffler is not there?

I have to assume that Commifornia is the awfulest, but Nevada (Clark County, at least) did the snap-test, and put a mirror under the truck to see if my "cat" was still under there. Always had to crank my AFC star wheel out of the fun-zone beforehand, and then back to "normal" for 11 3/4 months. :choochoo:

added on edit..... one guy upstream said "how fast the cloud clears".... The test I kept getting was an opacity test. They'd put a light-source and a sensor across the outlet, and if the "cloud" was dense enough to reduce the light more than 80% it was a "fail". (at least I think the pass/fail happened @ 80% opacity... could be wrong there)

The "trick " is to find a station where the person is ignorant on diesels and can't tell what should be there or someone that is smarter then the law. This person will know the true purpose of a smog check and test for that only
