Can a diesel engine run lean without damage? If i turn down the fuel will it be ok?
I think it will smoke less and lower egt's.

I would say yes, although how much is the question -- b/c Jody has a "drive-thru" tune that does just that - pulls fuel from the injectors to quiet them down as I have been told..

the only thing that will happen is your motor won't run. a diesel won't run without fuel. if there isn't enough in there to ignite with compression then you pulled out too much fuel. also turning the fuel down will make the motor a PIG and you will more than likely get worse mileage as the motor will be trying harder to keep up....

im pretty sure sure Diesel power maganzine said it is fine and it is impossible to burn a piston like it is in a gasser. saying that i think it would be more effiecent until it couldn't run off the compression. i will go look for the maganzine

alright it was in the June Issue of Diesel Power Magazine. it was in the article of porting 6.0 liter Powerstroke heads. here it talks about running a engine lean and I quote


" in addition to atomization in a gas engine, any time you increase air flow you increase the fuel reqirments nesscary to keep a proper air/fuel mixture. the last thing you want in a gasoline engine is to run lean. "" nothing burns a piston faster than a good lean mixture, young said with a grin"" ."" in a diesel application, lean is good. the leaner you run the engine (until you put out the flame and lose compression) the cooler it runs which usually means better fuel Econmy.

Diesels are totally opposite of a gasser, run it rich, and you'll burn it up. Run it lean and it has no power and runs cold, just like ^^ said. Just don't pull the fuel back so much it starts missing, or you can damage the engine from excessive vibration, it just wears the bearings faster.

i said nothing about power adders just running straight diesel will not. i didn't know running it rich will burn the piston but it kinda makes sense

So how much smoke should I see, when revving at idle and no boost? And how can I tune it for no smoke and some power?

well you should not see any smoke at idle. i know nothing about Lancer diesels so im guessing just making enough air to keep up with the fuel and it wont smoke. with proper tuning it should work. turn down your injection pump and use your new aftermarket turbo to make some boost. WARNING just dont blow the headgasket or head studs. rememebr i dont know anything about them so i have no idea how much boost the engine can take. proper tuning will probaly get rid of smoke. thats the bottom line
