i'm land locked down here in oklahoma, and i don't know much about the work boats that you guys use...
how fast will either the Malone or the Eastern go?
do they come up on plane or do they just kind of plow through?
if you had some of your own pots, could you work for yourself?
are fishing permits real expensive?
about what wave height is the limit for these boats? 3 to 4, 4 to 5?
please forgive me if these are extra stupid questions....

**************************************************
if you and your girl friend don't mind eating out with some old okies,
wifey and i would like to come up to the northeast in the next couple years.
you pick the place and it will be our treat....

the Malone is more of a work boat, thats why the bows are high to take a wave. the eastern up here alot of guys convert them to work boats. cuz they are built well a good stable working platform.

works boats are what is called a "displacement hull" made to carry weight. now so much go fast. but as you can see www.lobsterboatracing.com
we make displacement hulls go fast by adding spray rails and lifting rails, some time numerous lifting rails to keep the boat on top of the water. like a "planing hull" or speed boat style.

i have a lobstering license i have a full class 1. costs $340 a year.
you can't just buy one any more.. now you have to go through a 3 year apprentice program.. then when your finished with that you get put on a waiting list. for ever 2 lobstermen out, died, give up there license or what ever the stae lets one new guy in.

rod fishing is free unless you sell the fish then you need a commercial license.
i don't think those are easy to get??

i have my own lobster traps/pots. and i have a 24' boat. she not to pretty. and the engine blew about year and a half after i bought her. i'm hoping to have her paid off soon. so i can finally move on.. i been looking at a 30' jones port with a 4:53 turbo Detroit i might buy in the spring..

i think you might like a Mitchell cove 20' they have a high bow and take a stern drive well. a friend of mine had one with a 351 ford and Volvo stern drive. i think Mitchell cove sold the molds to O’Hara Corporation.
i can't seem to find a site on the net. so you can see what i'm talking about.
http://www.oharabait.com/ i'm fairly sure these are the same people maybe if you give them a call they can send you some info on the boats?

since you are in the business and on the water alot,
i'm curious to know your opinion on the Tolman Skiff....
don't be concerned about anybody's feelings if you think the boat is a joke.
or if you think it might be dangerous...

I REALLY LIKE ALL BOATS, and i like being on the water.

my dad had me fresh water fishing from a very early age.
also i used to own a scuba shop and i'm a diver.

what would all the electronics cost on a boat like the one below?
GPS, radar, fuel use gauge, depth sounder, VHF radio

bow2no1 10-23-2007 02:22 PM

honestly i think the tolman skiff is ugly!
http://www.alaska.net/~tolmanskiffs/

that doesnt mean it's not a good sea worthy boat.
most things i buy i usually say i'm going to keep this for a long time.
eventually i loose interest and sell it. so with that in mind. i don't think the tolman skiff would have a good re-sale.

eastern is a fairly new boat builder.. there molds are bought from other boat builders.
there smaller boats where originally "seaway boats" and some of the larger ones are "JC"
eastern just bought the molds when they went out of business.

seaway is back again with a whole new line http://www.seawayboats.com/index.cfm...owse&pageid=49
very nice boats!

as far as equipment they very in price
this is the bottom machine/ sounder i have
http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/4,8350.htm
i buy most of my equipment through Hamilton.
it's not the cheapest. but commercial lobstermen/fishermen get a 15-25% discount

i have an older loran, no gps or radar.. radar's are a no no.. up here..
if you go lobstering on foggy days and have a radar usually yer up to no good.

but usually a furuno or raytheon are good radars.

radios i have one similar to this one http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/4,24893.htm and a older Motorola Triton 2
i love the old Motorola's they are just hard to come by, they send and receive really well!
i have 2 radios cuz the guys in my area are usually on 2 different channels.
