ok my dad just started hot shot driving and he is towing a lil on the heavy side 17000lbs and up he is using a 2007 3500 with the lmm. the problem he is having is the fan will never shut off and its killing his fuel mileage. his truck is bone stock even the tires are still the stock size. so far i have recommended a cold air intake and a set of electric fans that push so he can mount them on front and still keep his stock fan. i have also recommended a different thermostat that opens sooner, water/meth injection, cleaning the radiator because i know it might be caked up with gunk from driving since it all ready has 150,000 miles on it, and also flushing his radiator and adding some royal purple ice to it.

my question is is there anything else he can do to help the engine run cooler besides the things i have mentioned. he doesn't want to remove the dpf for fear of dps inspections so that's out of the question. thank in advance i look forward to hearing your advice.

any body have any more ideas or did i hit the nail on the head with this one?

It sounds like the fan is just doing it's job. It's only been in the 100s since May around here and probably worse for you there.

The newer diesels run hotter overall to help with the emissions, so you are fighting that right off the bat. Electrics probably won't help much as a pusher, plus I don't know if there is enough space to get good electrics in front of the stack.

An aftermarket CIA won't seal off as well as the stock intake, a higher flowing filter night be a better way, but they don't seem to filter as well as the stocker.

Cooler t-stats won't help and will set a code when driving unloaded for undertemp.

Water/meth- don't know enough about it.

Cleaning the stack is a very good idea with that many miles and it is possible the fan clutch is being over active due to age, so he might want to replace it with a new Delco one. The aftermarket ones are usually set very low to enguage and you will go from bad to worse.

Don't forget, right foot is key to pulling heavy. ;)

so your pretty much saying the water temp is going to stay hot no matter what

years ago we put bigger rads. on. that seemed to help. makes the temp hard to warm in the winter though. i might try the royal purple ice
