2006 Liberty Jeep CRD

Hi Guys I'm known as Country Bumpkin
I am having trouble with my 2006 Liberty 2.8 CRD
Will appreciate any help you can offer
It has 45 thousand miles
It is going to the limp mode steady. If I hit the fuel hard even at slow speeds it will shut right off
Any acceleration, other than mild puts it in limp mode.
I have cleaned my map sensor, it was not crudy, just covered in oil.
Unplugging it at the air box, does not change anything.
I am lost at what to do. The dealers in my area are out of the question.
Merry Christmas and thanks Guys

I have an 06, have you changed the fuel filter? could be a ton of things, get the codes read and report back.

:welcome: to DB!

BIGHORN08 12-22-2011 08:18 PM

Welcome! And let me be the first to say it, cuz some others won't be as nice about it. You would probably get better feedback and more help if you didn't post in the non-technical section.:tttt: Techs and site sponsors are always rummaging, looking for new questions to answer. Probably the Dodge General Section would be the best place to start. Good luck!:c:

Welcome Bumpkin,

to make it easier I moved the complete thread.

The CRD has the same filter unit as the XJ Cherokee. And the same problems.

The CRD unit is very sensitive to air in the fuel lines. So if you mount a different filter unit, you are calling for trouble.

If you change the filters you must be sure that:

a) all rubber seals are tight and new (do not overtighten- it will not seal better).
b) put some diesel on the seal to assist sealing.
c) you have to bleed the fuel lines.

It is advisable to use a vaccum pump to refill the filter to make sure no air remains in the filter instead of using the built in fuel pump.
Make sure that you use new fresh fuel lines with new hose clamps. The old ones are getting hard and will not seal tight anymore. So air is getting into the lines.

Limp mode is a signal for some serious trouble- it usually happens when an important signal is lost and not been able to replace with constant number. Did you reconnect all sensors correctly? You touched the map sensor. Is it still ok?
Check the wiring!
The CRD is completly electronic controlled to gain high fuel efficiency and to keep emissions low. For that reason the DTC Diagnostic Trouble Code is an important hint.
If you want help you have to explain in detail what you have touched so far. It makes it impossible to track a failure if it is mixed up with welcome and x-mas greetings. Do have in mind that helps costs valuable time of our members- so make it as simple as possible to them to help you.

Depending on the error codes you have two problems- a fuel pressure related one (changed the filters) and a MAF sensor(cleaned the maf) problem. Because you touched both of them.

P0068-MANIFOLD PRESSURE/THROTTLE
POSITION CORRELATION

P0093 - FUEL RAIL PRESSURE
MALFUNCTION POSITIVE PRESSURE
DEVIATION

P0101-MAF SENSOR SIGNAL NEGATIVE
DEVIATION

P0101-MAF SENSOR SIGNAL POSITIVE
DEVIATION

P0108-MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE
SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH

I hope this will help. Have a nice and troublefree X-mas time!

Please, do us a favour- we have different sections.
'Welcome' does mean welcome! No problems discussed! That does mean no problems are discussed!
Urgents problems can be posted in the 'diesel in distress' section. And at last we have the Jeep Liberty section. I know that is a bit confusing for a noob. But we do it for a reason. It makes it easier to solve problems and to help our members.
Again:hellox::welcome:

Deezel..thanks for your info...I am not sure if I am in the correct section as you made note. Alot of us old timers are not great with computers.will post when I get back at the Liberty.

No problem-I'm also an old timer...

Keep us informed about your process!

2006 liberty 2.8 crd
I took the two air to air hoses off and checked them for cracks or damage...some oil in side

I cleaned them up..hoses and clamps were is good shape...Still confused

gijohn45 12-26-2011 09:56 PM

if you have some oil in the maf sensor take some denatured alcohol and spray on it and let it dry... this usually helps get the oil off it. I use to have a K&N air filter that the oil on it would mess with the MAF and I would have to clean it all the time...

Deezel Stink3r 12-27-2011 12:15 PM

Oil on the maf is usually not possible since the maf is located on the air intake in front of the turbo. So do you talk about the boost and air temperature sensor?

countrybumpkin 12-27-2011 03:42 PM

Yes... the turbo boost sensor and the air temp sensor are the map sensor I guess...I cleaned it , no carbon just oil... as I had the sensor at the air box unpluged for a long time. I pluged it back in... shortly after that my problens with the limp mode shuting her down started.
thanks

Deezel Stink3r 12-28-2011 10:31 AM

The missing sensor could have caused a permanent failure writing into the ECM.
If so the ECM/PCM must be reset by the Dealer!
There is no other way to do it. Disconnecting the battery is useless!
It seems to be a simple solution.:pca1:

countrybumpkin Liberty crd 2.8 limp mode hard to start

new filters were in to day 250-33647 wix $33.29 changed filter unhooked air box sensor.
had to re tightened filter as was leaking took it off inspected the centre small gasker(round rubber it was in place (only one ) i thought there might be a 2nd on it as the center ring gasket was missing when i took off the old filter..all is working fine right now . I am suprised the eng light is not on with the air box sensor disconected.
I will test it again tomorrow, hope is works as well as today.
Thanks for all your guys help!

Deezel Stink3r 01-05-2012 02:08 PM

I'm happy to hear it works for you.
ECM is setting an emergency fixed point to help with the missing values of the air box sensor.
Keep my fingers crossed for you tomorrow!:tu:

mikmaze 01-05-2012 03:25 PM

it will set a cel, but you will get better mpg with it unplugged, and have a bit peppier drive.

countrybumpkin 01-05-2012 04:21 PM

Mikmaze./.thanks..u r giving me a litte more confidence.....what is this 13 over ? sounds like a 125/ 13 speed fuller:)

mikmaze 01-05-2012 07:24 PM

64 71 13 is a turbo, and so is an s480........... compound turbo's

countrybumpkin 01-05-2012 11:13 PM

mikmaze..I am not much on turbos... Air research is what I had on the old cats..and what I wss thinking reading your # was maybe old 64 gm with 3 or 4 71 cu'' detroit ( 2 stroke) and 13over being a 9.5 or 12.5 18.6 foot torque Fuller 13 speed od transmittion...any way I had the liberty 2.8 CRD out for a good, fairly long run , it worked great only codes was p0102 . I rad my reader pluged in and kick out the code it would come back when I would restart her..I sure its only the plug at the air box that I have unpluged.
I bought the old girl new 6 years ogo, and thinking about selling or trading..on what there is nothing new that pleases me. I have 75000 km no serious probs. but some pains in the but. no that it is working I think I might keep it.
D u know any one with lg. millage on the 2.8? with no serious problems? (to make my confdence a little stronger)
thanks again.

2006 liberty CRD 2.8

good morning guys. ..the 2.8 liberty crd is still working fine! although last Fri night I was going up a hill and decited to burn out some carbon (something I never done before )...I don't think it was a good idea! as the revs started to drop on the climb in od, I hit the fuel to the floor ... did not go to passing gear, as maybe I was past that point of speed..so I hit the od/direct button ...she kicked in just past the 3000 rpm for a second or so..then the limp Mode. it did not shut down, I finished the hill (on the Hwy) I put it in neutral turned the key off than on re started with out stopping..all was fine again..4 days later still working fine..the code read po234 boost pressure negtive deviation.
Thanks
Countrybumpkin

mikmaze 01-16-2012 08:55 AM

100k miles and ya need to do timing belt, not an option..... interference motors and bad things happen when timing belts break. As for your run up the hill, could be a small boost leak, or plugged up egr valve causing poor boost performance.

LIBERTYinLIBERTY 02-18-2012 02:06 PM

MAP sensor in the intake, soots up, limp mode. Allen screw to remove it an spray it with brake cleaner.

kd6icz 03-11-2012 10:12 PM

This sounds very similar to a problem I had with a VW TDI 10 years ago. Normal level ground driving was fine. But when you needed more on a hill or to pass the engine would go into limp mode.

It turned out to be a very small vacuum leak in a T connector. What was happening was the ECU would tell the electronic valve to open the actuator on the turbo vein but there wasn't enough vacuum to perform the operation. The boost sensor didn't see the pressure the ECU was expecting so it would drop it down to limp mode and throw a code.

manbearpig 04-12-2012 09:55 PM

How was fuel mileage before?

jrsavoie 06-25-2014 07:36 AM

Installing a lift pump on these is a good idea
