Jeep Liberty CRD 2006 engine troubles

I'm a complete newbie at this site.
I've had my 2006 CRD for 2 years, and love it for off-roading in New Mexico and surrounding areas.

Recently I developed engine troubles, my trusty mechanic (previous diesels I've had have been no problem for them) here in town took the engine apart, but now can't put it back together, because apparently the tools to put the engine back together cost $4000. Apparently what's wrong with it is that the some of the valves got loose and some of the valve lifters disintegrated, apparently due to a lubrication problem, since the oil rapidly was pushed out when one of the valves got loose. Not sure what else is wrong with it, but since they can't put it back together again, it's a moot point.

So I'm stuck with finding a used engine (I did find one so far) to replace it. So my question is: How to evaluate the used engine.

Also: Is anyone interested in a non-functioning diesel engine (2006 CRD)?

Thanks for listening.
