2.8l Crd ccv mod
Can a ccv mod be performed on the 2.8l crd motor in the jeep libertys
Bought one this weekend:jump: |

Congrats on your new Liberty! have fun with it!
Why do you want to delete the CCV? The oil fog or oil mist does act as an intake valve seat lubrication and is burned safely. I would be more concerned about the EGR. It builds up a sticky, goey mass wich decreases the intake diameter significantly! I added two pictures of the intake of the Cherokee 2.5TD Diesel after 60kmiles. The build up is already 3 - 5mm thick! It took me a complete weekend to get that nasty stuff out. No wonder is does go along with a power loss and smoke development- the engine is starving for air! The difficulty in the Liberty is to delete the EGR with throwing an engine code.:humm: Maybe this brings you into the right direction. |
Can you point me to where the egr is it has 31,500 miles as of now trying to get all the info
i can to learn how to work on them Thank you so much for your input:tu: |
The EGR (Exhaust gas recirulation) is a pipe that connects the exhaust manifold with the intake manifold via a electronic actuated vaccum valve.
http://up.picr.de/4715816.jpg The EGR works only at partial load. It opens while at part throttle and dillutes fresh intake air with exhaust gas. That decreases emissions. The disadvantages are: - a slight higher fuel consumption( up to 7%) - dirt in the intake - some claim a decreased throttle response Technically it is useless- engines being built before emisson control don't have EGR and run strong all times. I will do a bit research how to delete it on a Liberty. I know that the delete will throw an engine fail code. So it is a bit tricky, but I know it can be done! I will search and give you answers tommorrow! :c: |
As I told you I did some research:
Before you do anything on your Jeep, drive to your dealer and ask for recalls- Chrysler called in most of the libertys for an ECM update to avoid EGR related failure !!! You should ask for those updates! People do install a CCV catch can wich filters oil to avoid dirty sensors and failure related readings of the boost and air temperature sensor. Some people clean them every 6k miles. To give you an impression about your intake dirt buildup you can check the boost sensor. It is located here: http://up.picr.de/4716803.jpg This is the picture of an dirty boost sensor: http://s1.up.picr.de/4716804.jpg And as a comparison the cleaned boost sensor: http://s2.up.picr.de/4716806.jpg If your boost sensor looks that dirty-its time for an EGR delete. Most simply add a metal shim to block that EGR. The downside of it is the Check Engine light is coming on. There are two ways to avoid that: The first expensive way is a programmer which allows you to delete the EGR with a simple push of a button. The bad side about it is it runs about 750$! But it does also provide several boost levels like the normal smarty tuners. Some people do delete also the butterfly valve: I copied those pictures to show you: Depending on the sensivity of the electronics you may pass without a CEL light. http://up.picr.de/4716840.jpg |
The following pictures show a CCV catch can install, to avoid oil in the intake or in the intercooler- but in my opinion the oil isn't harmful - it will burn if it gets to the chambers. I'm more concerned aboutthe nasty combination oil and soot. This is what causes failure.
You can see the CCV exit, the lines and the extra catch can. You have to clean that can once in while, too! Don't wonder yourself about the Right hand steering engine layout- it's a british picture... http://up.picr.de/4716862.jpg http://s1.up.picr.de/4716863.jpg http://s2.up.picr.de/4716864.jpg http://s3.up.picr.de/4716865.jpg I still do not have access to a Factory service manual, to have a look where and which bolts have be removed to insert an EGR shim. But i will search on that... |
Well it seems that the previous owner new something about that ccv filter
the jeep has that on there it is a mann-hummel provent 200 just ordered some new media filters for it. Replaced all hoses this evening as he had some bs hose material on there. Next is an oil change and new filter the oil looks so black compared to the f350( even know the dealer said they changed it :scare2: Thanks again for your help ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Can you tell me more about the tuner everything i find does not talk about the egr delete option |
All recalls have been performed
|
Thats good, I have read that some versions had difficulties with high water temperatures due to a wrong water temp sender!
:c: Do you have the manuals now? Please ask Kerma about the EGR option- they don't have it listed! I do like the fact, that you can reset the engine to factory specs if needed. So you can be easy with the engine and only switch to more power when really needed. like towing or going through heavy terrain. :tu: |
I talked to the the tech or possibly the owner
He would not really say if the tuner will actually delete the egr it is a political issue because how does he know who i am. He kinda beated around the bush. so i really do not know if it will delete the egr or not. Although the lesser tech kind did say it would delete the egr. So i will think about the purchase for now. Wish it was an easier mod Yes i got the manuals Thanks again |
You have the provent 200 already? Thats great.
I think, that the EGR delete is a neccessary mod. Luckily your mileage is very low. If you have the time, just pull out and check the boost sensor. The dirt on the sensor will indicate the overall inside dirt buildup. As I have seen in the past the relacement/cleaning of the intake gets expensive if done by the dealer. And I really don't see the need for spending that money if the EGR can be deleted in advance. |
Cleaned the boost sensor today it was dirty but i do not think it looked as bad as the pisture you sent me.
Read the manual some today I have located my egr will try to remove it and clean on sunday.:argh: Possibly remove the butterfly as you showed in the picture |
Be careful the butterfly regulates EGR flow- you need a block off then.
An interesting thing you may tell your wife also: If you look into the exhaust chapter of the 2006 manual, you will find a chart with various idle times depending on load and driving style to prevent damage to the turbo. I never have seen that on all previous diesel vehicles I had... It seems that Chrysler engineers starts thinking:tu: |
cheapest way to disable the egr is to unplug the MAF sensor. You will get a check engine light, but that's it(mine has been like this for 9+months). The best route is a tune from Green Diesel Engineering. Their "eco" or "hot" tune will take care of it.

Closed CCV systems are purely to reduce crankcase emissions to the atmosphere. There is zero benefit to returning it to the engine. |

More HP More Torque Run a straight pipe No CEL (what?) ... and still pass emissions (what? what? ... YES) Welcome to the utopia known as GDE Hot Tune. It's the first thing you should do when you buy an 05'-06' CRD :) |
