looking for some insight...

A buddy of mine has an 08 Cherokee with the 3L Diesel in it. He is considering upgrading the turbo for a bit more power. I know gas motors, not too much about diesels. I have a few questions...

1. I know from the factory, at least I think I knowthat its a Garrett Turbo. Can anyone tell me which model they installed as OEM, so I can figure out the proper upgrade for him? What is the boost set at from the factory?

2. Does the car have a BOV installed from the factory, i would imagine it does. Would the goal of more boost be achievable through changing over to an electric BOV with a controller?

3. The fuel system. Are the injectors anywhere near being maxed out in stock trim? Can the factory fuel system support more boost without physical mods?

4. The ECM (PCM), whichever it is in that vehicle. I know that the computer can account for minor variations, (intake and catback exhaust) without tuning, but will tuning be required for the added boost?

Thanks in advance for the info.

Instead of messing with the turbo why don't you look for a programmer?
Is it a Cherokee or Liberty? Didn't know you could get a diesel in a Cherokee.

It would be a liberty, they stopped making cherokees in 01 or 02 IIRC.

Like scotts posted , just find a programmer for it, you don't modify a diesel like you do a gasser , we don't need to adhere to a stichiometric air/fuel ratio, just put a little more fuel in , the turbo will do the rest ( within reason obviously)

1. pass
2. no and no ( pretty hard to run a vaccum operated BOV on a diesel eh)
3.It's more like , can the air system keep up with the amount of fuel that you COULD get into the engine, not can the fuel system keep up to the boost, no fuel = no boost
4. this is what the programmer is for

AFAIK the only engine choice now is the 3.7, no more diesels available

grand cherokee comes with a 3.0 diesel now. They are really quick.

forget the more power, i want the milleage. what upgrades from stock could be done to get 30 mpg or better? right now i get 22mpg

All Jeep models are available as Diesels in europe- most people over there are tired of these gas guzzlers.

To get 30+ is still very difficult- the large amount of power they provide still has to be feed with fuel. Sadly they don't have the weight of an old style Cherokee, they are mostly up in the 2to league.

All other questions already answered by JKM.
