ECM elimination? is this possible??

I am looking at purchasing a later model used diesel pickup, however I am concerned about ecm issues. Is there anything out there in the later model trucks that can run with no ECM ? I don't want a turbo either, I am looking for the ultimate in reliability, not necessarily performance.

Can any of the 2000 and up trucks have the ECM eliminated and still run?

Or should I be focused on purchasing an early 80's 6.2 before ECM's were introduced to diesel trucks?

Dodge Cummins before 1998.5 have a mechanical fuel system, no ECM. They do have a turbo though. The 12 valve Cummins is a very reliable engine.

Thanks for that information, I started looking around for those, not easy to find in my area...trying to find an extended cab, 4x4 pre-98 2500 diesel in Michigan is a tall order...

Craigslist and autotrader are your best friends in something like that.

Yes, I still can't find much locally, but I did find a CUCV M1009 1984 military Blazer with a 6.2 that I'm going to look at today.
