96 12v, runs funny, help?

got a 96 dodge ram 12v cummins, idles fine, but wont rev up above 1200 without sputtering and smoking like crazy (whitish gray smoke). seems to be worse when the engine is cold, and smooths out when put under load. driving down the road it will sputter with 20-50% throttle, 50%+ hooks up and gits. im thinking possibly injection pump timing? injectors are new, head gasket is new, valve lash is correct, fuel filter is new, fuel is fresh, turbo boosts fine, air filter is clean, transfer pump works fine. any ideas?

ZX980, I have a similar problem until engine warms up a bit, did you find the problem?

how similar?

When the engine is started it has a slight miss and the exhaust blows a little blue. After it runs for about a minute or two the miss goes away and the exhaust clears up.

is it cold where you live? they generally do leak a little blue when its super cold. any while plums of smoke on start-up or driving? what is you idle set at? i had a miss a few weeks ago ended up being the OFV.

check fuel pressure....if low clamp off return line...if it rises change OFV if no rise change lift pump...if pressure is good and still has the problem check the timing, it could have slipped

Hey, thanks everyone for the replies. Got the problem resolved (I think). A little history on my 92 Cummins, 5 speed. I bought it about five years ago and after replacing the ring and pinion, drove many happy miles. After I bought a 98 24V Cummins I decided to part with the 92, BIG mistake, I wanted it back before it even got out of the drive way. 10 months later I was able to buy it back. While I owned it I always ran Stanadyne additive (due to the fact that the fuel sold where I live is poor quality), and it started and ran perfect. Anyway, short story long, I started using the Stanadyne again and the problem cleared up. Again thanks for all the input. Dan
