Air Compressors - Connection ideas....

Hey guys, I'm lookin' to put in an electric air compressor like a Viair, etc. I know most these pumps have a fitting on the inlet side that allows a hose to be ran to a remote location for filtered air supply for instances where the pump is mounted under the truck in the slush zone. :)

Now, here's my idea. Why not tie into the intake manifold and feed air from the turbo into the compressor? Seems like a great idea for 2 counts:

1. Air is already filtered by a large element that is usually religiously maintained by most of us diesel enthusiasts.

2. The air is already pre-pressurized to anywhere from 25psi up to 50 or more on many street driven tow rigs. By feeding air that's already pressurized into the pump, the pump won't have to do as much work, should push more CFM, and not have to run as long.

Am I smokin' somethin' or does this sound like a good idea? I know semi-truck air compressors are almost always plumbed this way.

Well i am sorry to say that i have less knowledge about these things.I would suggest you to consult a mechanic.

all the trucks i have here at work are that way, but they are into the engine driven compressor. dont see why it wouldnt work.

you are a thinker and thats good

only problem is the compressor cant supply the volumn of air to make a difference, you would be only adding a fraction of 1% per volumn

other problem is heat, the air from the compressor will be plenty hot, superheated air isnt good

your air charge from the turbo pinwheel will be around 600 CFM
