Fuel Pressure Comparison Cummins / Duramax / Powerstroke
 
I have heard that the commonrail system has a much greater fuel pressure than earlier model fuel systems.
Could someone out there have actual data to show this, and to what degree is this pressure greater?

I have been told that the 03 and newer Cummins, have much higher pressures than 12v models. I know that is true, but how much more? 20% more ? .....50%?

Also I have been told the Powerstroke 03 and newer have made a similar change?...
what about those?

I have also been told earlier models in the Duramax have this increased pressure in the commonrail system.

What are the facts?....:pca1:

2001-current Duramax, 2003-current Cummins, 2008-current Powerstroke all use a High Pressure Common Rail Injection System, that pressurizes the fuel to 23000-29000psi before the fuel enters the injector, and uses an electronic or piezoelectric solenoid to open the injector, they are very quick and allow for several injection events(usually 1 pre-injection, Main injection, and 1 or more post injections) that allows for the quiet engine operation associated with HPCR engines

7.3-6.0 powerstrokes used a Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injection(HEUI) system that uses High pressure oil(4000psi) to pressurize the fuel inside the injector(19000-20000psi) and uses an electronic solenoid to open the injector and can have several injection events

the 12v p-7100 uses an inline injector pump that pressurizes(17000-18000psi) the fuel and sends a fuel to each injector individually for each injection event

Just curious, how do you know this info? You sound like you are very specific and certain of this info. What criteria do you have to verify it?

I'm not being a jerk, but I may decide on certain model trucks for certain fuels I will use based on actual info. So, it's a big deal to me.

Also, the 7.3's as you go back in the earlier models are these pressures all very similar? I ask because I owned a 87' 6.9 and wow that was an awsome motor for my fuel blends. And I have a hard time believing the late 80's-early 90's non-turbo 7.3's have similar pressures to the newest models....like the 2000-2003 last of the 7.3's. But I don't know what the truth is, just my guess from experience.

I am looking for a good deal on an older 7.3, I would like a 90's model that came with a turbo. Or I would opt for a older 5.9 cummins. I'm talking about a complete truck in 4x4, but motor is my buying point. Anyhow, thanks for the details.

if you are looking for a 7.3 and looking for a little more pep you could look for a 93 7.3IDI turbo, or make the step up to the 7.3PS in the 94-98 f250, and if you go cummins look for a 94-97 p-pumped 12v:tu:

google search works incredibly well, Im no expert, Im just a self taught enthusiast

The 6.9IDI, 7.3IDI(in-direct injection) use the same injection pump, and the pressures remain close to the same but fuel flow is what makes the changes in power, the Stanadyne DB2 Injection pump they use creates about 6700psi of injection pressure, considerably lower than the newer Direct Injection engines, the GM 6.2 and 6.5 use a similar DB2 pump with similar pressures:tu:
