7.3 ford or 6.6 chevy/gmc

Looking to purchase a somewhat low mile ford or chevy/gmc diesel. I am wondering what you guys think in terms of value for the money which is the better way to go.

My choices would be 02-03 7.3L Ford or and 06-07 (Classic) duramax. Duramax is more $$, but am wondering if you think its worth it.

I love both trucks but was looking for some helpful advice on the two choices above.

Also, looking for suggestions on where to look for sale outside of autotrader, cars.com and craigslist.

Thanks

well you prolly wont be able to find a low mile 7.3 very easily. but if you could I would go that way but Im a ford guy usually. I really dont like the way dirtymaxs sound

FastCR 09-12-2010 02:24 PM

duramax. nooooooooo question.

Depends, do you want a good tough work truck with a solid front end or do you want a cushy ride and quite engine? What are you going to be using the truck for? Daily driving with occasional towing/hauling, tow rig, or are you looking for a high HP/TQ number rig?

Out of those 2 choices I would have to go 7.3 no other powerstroke though :c:

Thanks guys..........I will be using the truck as a daily driver but will also be using for occasional towing (4-6k lbs) and some hauling.

I wish I knew what a good price was on the 7.3's.....they seem to be a little spendy for an 8-10 year old truck right now at the places I've seen them.

Is 90k mi a good time to purchase one of these? Trannies I heard can be an issue at the 100k mark especially if they have been used to pull. I just want to avoid dropping $20k on something that will need a bunch of maintenance soon.

Thoughts??

Why no Cummins ?:humm:

The Cummins would be an option except that the crew cabs are too small. Once you get into the mega cab the trucks get too spendy for me to make sense. The Cummins motor would be the first choice for me engine wise.

I'm a die hard ford guy. But for a DD and towing, I would go with the Dmax with the 6 speed. If you plan on doing any off roading, go with ford.

Search ebay for a Ford Cummins conversion. I quite often see 1 or 2 on there.

i have owned both trucks you are looking to get and would definitely go with the duramax. for a daily driver it is just so much more comfortable and i think it pulls better than the ford 7.3. certainly a lot smoother.

I would definitely want an 06 or 07 classic for the dmax if I was to go that way just because of the $$$. Is the idea of finding one of these (dmax CC 4x4) with say 75k mi or less for under $26k just out of the question? Thats about the max I could lay out on a Diesel right now. I am trying to get into an F350 CC 4x4 7.3L for a max of $20k......with low mi (under 75k mi).....

Tough task....I know....let me know your thoughts.

FastCR 09-12-2010 11:38 PM

the dmax has amazing power, bolt on queen, and the allison is just freakin amazing. I've driven 7.3s and a cummins with a stick and a goerend, and the allison was just as amazing the last time I drove one as the first time. The front end isn't as weak as its made out to be, and the powerstroke front end doesn't hold up like a kingpin D60. The 7.3 is good for some miles, but if your deciding between the 2, I think the duramax is definately the way to go.
Get an LLY if you can, or an LB7 that had all injectors replaced under recall. If you can't find either, its not that bad, thats just the only problem the duramax has had. The only real downside is the $$$$ required to lift it. Power its a no brainer and with proper tuning people are pulling some crazy MPGs with proper tuning.

Get a LBZ.

Yeah....the research I've done would seem to lean me that direction with the upgrades they did for the LBZ. I wonder if the injectors have been done though, if the older ones are a better way pricewise.:humm:

94cummins diesel 09-13-2010 01:23 PM

i wouldnt do a ford they naturally drag ass no offense 5.9Bronco... an duramax there ok i like them but watch your drive shafts an cummins is the real deal so id get a dodge just my opinion

bobcat67 09-13-2010 01:42 PM

yeah the 7.3 wouldn't even be an option to me if the Duramax is also an option, better power, better transmission, chances of still having a warranty, and best ride out there sure some will argue, but they're in denial

I would do the duramax and totally agree with you except I cant seem to find the 06 DMAX with 6-speed allison for $5 or $6k more than the Ford 7.3L which is about my cutoff....

monster12valve 09-25-2010 07:59 PM

the front end on a dmax is DEFINITLEY as weak as they say it is!!!! great truck.... horrible front end... it is made ride nice. but yea i would DEF get the dmax.
