Any straight-pipers in CO on here?

If so, where do you live and is the diesel emissions requirement an issue? I have no cat on my 05 cummins and am a little worried about registering in the Denver area. Any help would be appreciated.

You will surely get bagged for that in Denver, or anywhere nearby. There are very few places left on the front range not doing emissions testing. I'm presently planning a project to reinstall a cat on the '06 due to recent changes in my area's rules. :argh:

NadirPoint,

so are you saying they physically look for the cat or that you feel it will fail w/o one? How does that work with the previous years that didn't have them I wonder? I kept my old exhaust, so I still have the cat and will have it clamped back on if I have too. I was hoping it was just a tailpipe measurement and that I might pass just fine.

No they look. They know what years to look for, according to the OEM specs. If it's not there they won't even test it.

CO only checks opacity. There is no visual inspection and most stations don't even open the hood. Ignore NadirPoint, he doesn't have the slightest clue what hes talking about.

Use Diesels Only on Alameda and you're pretty much guaranteed to pass unless your engine pukes a cloud that fills the shop.

Once again FI demonstrates his extensive knowledge of all things diesel. The CO requirements are in a nutshell:
Counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson
Vehicles Tested: All model years with a 14,000-pound GVWR or less (new vehicles are exempt for first four years)
Test Type(s): Visual inspection for emissions-equipment tampering, onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) check (if applicable), and a smoke opacity test
Recently some areas of Weld and other non-enhanced category areas were included for diesel inspection.

I suppose if you can find a testing station that doesn't follow the rules, more power to ya!

You can get an SAE tech paper with all the details here: http://papers.sae.org/900329

so I will be in Arapahoe county. Maybe I will give that shop a call or another shop a call before I go in. If I need the cat to be re-installed, I have to cut it off the factory pipe and have it welded to my aftermarket exhaust. Thx guys.

**UPDATE**

So I called a few shops in CO and they definitely *DO* visual inspection for cat. I had mine welded back on today just to be safe and now my truck sounds normal again :td: Guess I will have to remove the muffler again and see how she sounds. If I find out different when I arrive, I will update this thread. Thanks for the input.

Not if you use the one I suggested.

Whole, or did you fix it for "visual" function only?
