So whats everyone think of the locked ECMs thats the industry is goin to? Discuss.

What's a locked ECM?
|
They got software in them that prevents the settings from being changed by a programmer.

IMHO, the days of diesel performance are numbered.

I don't think so.
It will be more difficult and the number of capable tuners with the knowledge to crack a locked ECM will be decrease. But the basics will be the same as we know it today. Stricter emisson laws will need stricter inspections and they will come. It makes my heart ache when I hear them reving the engine to the limit with no load at all-just to check emissions.:s: |
A lot of boxes don't change ECM settings at all, but rather intercept and modify signals going to the ECM to fool it in to doing things it doesn't want to do? Right?
Not to mention that stand-alone ECM's are gaining in popularity. Lock it or not, whatever, you'll be able to butcher it apart somehow. |
I agree with Begle and Diesel Stinker. It'll be more difficult and more expensive, but it will still happen.

I totally agree with you K50.
It will happen within the next decade. We will go with those 3L/100km cars( that we already have in germany). And instead V8's we will have 4ee-four electric engines- one at each wheel. No more roaring sounds just zoooooom... You can see the future already over here- CNG or bifuel cars are very popular at the moment. They raise the taxes to force you indirect to buy a new emission friendlier car, they ban high emission cars and trucks. I'm not allowed to drive into inner cities any longer, because of particle emissions. But it is ok to drive into the city with an ferrari consuming 3times more fuel than mine. ECM's will be cracked or those piggyback systems will increase as Begle1 already mentioned. Maybe tuning will be more moved into Sensor tricking. Thank god that engine parts arent sealed and interchangable like turbos or injectors. The only problem that I see are those fault codes or limphome modes. But time will also bring a solution for that. If driving is still affordable until then. |
