NV5600 Grinding In 3rd And 4th Gears

Hey guys, lately ive noticed, mainly when i first start driving my truck after sitting for a few hours or more, my truck will grind going into 3rd gear, its not a bad grind but its a grind none the less. Also, just recently it started doing it in 4th gear as well. Im not sure if this would be signs of my already hurt clutch going out on me or if this is something else. Please give me your input.

Johnny Cetane 08-20-2007 12:47 PM

hmmm just a guess but synchros maybe. only does it when cold? when was the last fluid change?

Benjamin 08-20-2007 12:49 PM

does it do it when you double clutch it? if it dosen't then i'd bet on the syncro's.....

CumminsCrazed 08-20-2007 05:25 PM

it only does it when cold or if i shift it fast, today after work i shifted it a little slower than normal and it never once did it

Not at all sure on fluid change, has 110k on it, ive owned it for 14k of that and ive never touched the fluid.

Maybe thats an idea for the WI GTG in 2 wks???

Also i can show you guys what its doing that day too if it does it

jasonfriedlin 08-20-2007 05:53 PM

Sounds like synchros to me, all shifting it slower is doing is letting the engine rpm match the transmission. That's the way big trucks r driven, because most of us never touch the clutch again after we get movin.

CumminsCrazed 08-20-2007 10:38 PM

ok so my next question is, does anyone sell just the synchros for the NV5600 and is it a serviceable transmission or not

tlse1 08-20-2007 11:38 PM

Chances are if the clutch is hurt and it not aftermarket like southbend with the up graded pilot bearing. Then I am going to say that your pilot bearing is not happy this can cause drag on the input shaft and cause the gears to grind.Or it is totaly destroyed and the added stress of the missing bearing is causing your input shaft to wear on the main shaft snout wich is right where 3rd and 4th gear synchros are at. My suggestion is to drain the fluid into a clean pan and look for any damage such as metal flakes. If no damage add new fluid make shure it is synchromesh and test drive. If the fluid change does nothing than I would take it to a compitant trans shop and have it completely gone through. You will have to take it completely apart for just synchros so why not do the whole thing while your there. Hope some of my babbling helped

same problem with my nv 4500

I have the same problem with my 97 2500 with the nv 4500 and I have changed the fluid with no improvement so I would be interested to see what you find on your truck.

CumminsCrazed 08-21-2007 12:51 PM

ok

what does it generally cost to have the whole tranny gone through and fix any damaged parts.

The NV-5600 is NOT meant to shift fast. Shifts should always be slow and delibarate.

exactly

Dr. Evil 08-21-2007 01:29 PM

As well, resting your hand on the shifter is a big no no....both drag racing type shifts and resting your hand on the shifter knob is real hard on the synchros.

DazedandConfused 08-21-2007 01:37 PM

Well your sync's are going south, bad thing about the NV5600 is parts are getting scarse and expensive. I know a rebuilt trans is now between $2900-$3800 depending on were you look. If you have a good friend that can do it or you can do it your self it would be alot cheaper. My 4500 was just went through Saturday and cost me $850. All my parts came from www.standardtransmission.com. I have a 4500 in mine and had to put in a new input, countershaft, bearings, syncs and a few other parts. I also am running aimsoil in it now.

that i can vouch for personally. drove one before i left the stealership. it DID NOT like what i was trying to make it do at all.

another place to try would be www.quad4x4.com Dan the gearman is very sharp....ifin he aint got the parts he may be able to guide you to them

cloker12 08-21-2007 05:08 PM

3rd gear grind

Dazed and confused was the $800 price just parts or was that parts and labor and did you also replace the pilot bearing and clutch?
Thanks

DazedandConfused 08-21-2007 06:04 PM

It cost me $850 all my parts and labor to tear it down and rebuild it. I pulled it out of the truck, took it to a friend of mine that runs a small diesel shop. We tore it down on Tuesday so he could order parts of Wed. Parts came in Friday night at almost 8:00 and the trans was together at 4:00 saturday afternoon. I had it in Saturday night by 9:00 and on the road. I already had a Southbend Con Fe in it so I just left it. It would have cost me $1900 for trans and new clutch.

Just so everyone knows when I contacted Dan at Quad 4X4 he had none of the parts I needed and didnt know were to find them at that time.

im almost afraid to ask wht a tear down and rebuild would cost on a 5600 then

dieseljunkie 09-01-2007 05:42 PM

With the NV5600 becoming more and more rare, that almost makes me wish I'd bought an auto. So, what happens if the trans dies after warranty is up? If I take it to the dodge dealer, will they just replace it with the G56?

Just my oppinion here but I think as many NV56's that are out there that someone will pick up on the needed parts and start makin aftermarket parts for us

Dr. Evil 09-01-2007 10:58 PM

One would think....has anyone heard of any new aftermarket parts for the 56's??

CumminsCrazed 09-02-2007 10:45 AM

well, i was at a meet yesterday and some good info sources said that the grinding im getting is more than likely my slave going out. So i think what ill do is get an upgraded slave for my truck and do a full fluid flush then go from there

jasonfriedlin 09-02-2007 11:04 AM

Sounds like a good place to start

commonrailman 05-14-2013 10:14 AM

My truck is Doing the same, keep us update in what it cost.

CumminsCrazed 06-02-2013 11:23 AM

put a whole new trans in it spring of 2012. Coupled that with South Bend 3600 DD clutch. Total cost was about 4500-5000 bucks
