F350 vs. Cummins 3500
 

Hello,
I have had a 1999 7.3L F350 for the past year and it now has 151,000 miles on it. When I bought it, it had about 120,000 miles of towing on it, and so the engine is tired. It does not pull like I think it should be pulling. I am considering selling it to get a new truck because I need something to pull my horse trailer. My current truck would start at 55 miles and hour with 2 horses in the trailer and by the time we were at the top of the hill I was going about 30 miles an hour in second gear (manual). I have put a chip on it and in tow mode it works much better, but I am thinking about selling it while its still worth some money. I wanted to see peoples opinions on the Cummins 3500 because I do not want a Ford 6.0L. I have not had a dodge before, but I have heard some good things about them. Please let me know what you think is a better truck and what problems you have had with either!

That ford should pull a two horse trailer no problem, dont be afraid to work these trucks...meaning hold it down while driving.

The Cummins is torque beast and will pull just about anything, stock it can be kinda doggy if you load them down to much but get a good chip on it that adds a little more fuel...

I would like to hear more about the ford, maybe something is wrong with it because that Powerstroke should go 500,000 miles no problem...

Yeah that power stroke should be just getting broken in at those miles. Have you replaced the fuel filter and such? When was the last time the truck had a tune up?

7.3s good but if it was me and looking for something for towing it would be the cummins 100%

ditch the stroker and go with a cummins, nothing pulls better

i would go with a cummins for pulling, the only big problem with the dodges is the front ends wear out a lil faster, but will out pull and get better mpg then ur ford. like said though, the motor in yours should be stronger than what ur saying, is the CEL on?

Well, I keep up on the filters and oil changes and everything on it. It has about 125,000 miles of towing on it, so Im thinking its just tired, but then again it is the 7.3 and I had the impression when I bought it that it would keep going strong. I was thinking about getting a compression test done on it to see what that said. I would like a truck that gets better mpg though, thats one of the reasons Im thinking cummins. My ford doesn't pull a 3 horse gooseneck with two horses in it like i think is should. I have the chip on now and usually keep it on the mileage setting. Its an edge attitude and without the chip the truck almost seems gutless. It sounds and runs fine though.

Ive got a 01 7.3 and it has 203k and i pull any where from 20k to 30k lbs all the at my job and its still runnin strong and all i had was a diablo tuner on tow

No its the edge juice with attitude. and yeah, I thought thats how 7.3's should be, but mine is struggling pretty bad. With the chip on tow when I pull two horses with the gooseneck its better, but its definitely towing something if you know what Im saying.
