5.9 vs 7.3

WIch do you guys think is a better engine for pulling, towing, and racing? I kinda think the 5.9 Cummins is a better engine for making big power. The 7.3 is tough and realible engine. WHat do you guys think? If this is not in the right section please move it or tell me were to post it.

the 5.9 is the most reliable. I always here of the 7.3 blowing heads and etc.

7.3 Cowboy 03-02-2009 09:19 PM

I have never heard of the 7.3 blowing heads.

I think the 5.9 is a better motor. There is alot more room in the engine do to it being a stright 6. The rods are bigger on the 5.9 over the 7.3 and the inline engines are alot stonger than a v-engine.

i have always loved the 7.3s personaly, great alaroud engine, best powerstrok ever made period nothing can even come close. but if you trully looking for the power the inline cummins will stand above them all, hands down

by the way the 7.3l powerstroke was the best powerstroke ever made, and i have never heard them blowing heads, gaskets maybe but thats no different the blowing a gasket on a cummins

Go with the Cummins. I own both an 01 7.3 and an 04 5.9. No comparison, the Cummins is overbuilt and is much easier to work on mechanically and space wise. There is no room in a 7.3 engine bay. Don't get me wrong, the 7.3 is a great engine with plenty of power and it sounds awesome, but it's the 2nd best engine you can buy. Mileage is another factor, 20-21 mpg on the highway in my 5.9, 16-17 mpg in the 7.3.

I have had several 5.9 diesels none of them had any problums. Had a 97 7.3 that got lemmoned :booo: but the 99 7.3 had no problums.
Stock power the 7.3 was a little better (compared to the same year dodge with a 5.9) But after adding a power chip to the 7.3 and the 5.9 the 5.9 was way better. More pulling power and I would consistently get 2mpg better with the 5.9 when pulling. Empty the mpg were almost the same.
I honestly would take a 6.0 over a 7.3 anyday.

Yeah the 7.3 is an AWESOME engine and would serve VERY well in stock set-up. I'll bet stock for stock you would be happy with either. You get into modding them.. 5.9 hands down.

5.9 period! If you notice when the 7.3 goes south, people don't rebuild them, they replace them with a 5.9.

i owudl have to say the 5.9... we had a 7.3 in the f350 dually at work, was a good truck, but my boss said it had problems from time to time... amongst a recall or 2, the cam position censor, which called it to stall. so id say he5.9, but my next choice would be the 7.3... its a loud engine too
