First diesel for a 16 year old?

Hi everyone, Im new to the forums. I've done some research on trucks, diesels in particular.
I'm mainly considering an OBS or SD 7.3, or a 12v cummins. The main reason I'd prefer a 12v is the simplicity of the engine, and I would feel a lot more comfortable working on it myself. Also, the parts are cheaper for the dodge. However, I live in New England, and I have seen firsthand how the dodges rust out. Also, the steering and transmission problems scare me. If I kept the engine mostly stock, would the transmission be that much of a worry?

My other option is an OBS 7.3 powerstroke (or a superduty if i can find one for cheap and in good condition). The fords are a much better all around truck, but more complicated engines and they are more expensive to fix. Also worse gas mileage. For around $5000 for the base truck (excluding tax, registration, repairs, insurance, etc), what do you guys think from experience would be most practical me? I know its not much money, but its all I can afford. Thanks for any input.

I have a 12valve and I love mine, especially for the simplicity of the motor like you said. As for the rust issue, I haven't had that issue. The auto transmission for the 12valve can last ok at stock level. If you start to modify the truck, then you will need to beef up the transmission. And it can get decent fuel milage. As for the steering issue, I e heard of that being with the 4x4 trucks.

The ford 7.3 is also another good motor. But I'm not to familiar with that motor.
