Starting VW Diesel on Workbench
 

I've taken an engine out of a 91 MK2 golf and I'm not quite sure about all of the electrical connections with the exception of the obvious ones like the starter motor and ground.

Can anyone tell me how I could get the engine running without having to connect it back to the ignition switch or fuse box.

So far I can get the engine turning and I get a clicking sound if I jump a live wire to an electrical clip at the top of the engine near the injectors. I'm not sure whether this is the start stop solenoid or the connector for the glow plugs so I only connect it for a short time when turning the engine which then generates a bit of grey smoke at the exhaust.

The assumptions I'm making are: to get this thing going I need to a) warm up the glow plugs for about 5 seconds then disconnect b) activate the start stop solenoid with 12v jumper lead and c) crank the starter motor.

I'm also assuming that this should start, all be it only for a short period, without a) the alternator connected b) the water pump turning (no alternator belt) c) glow plug temperature sensor disconnected d) the other cable that I think relates to an oil preasure sensor e) the single connector to the diesel tank disconnected, which I'm assuming is only a guage indicator as opposed to a pump and f) the tube that goes from the chank case to power break unit disconnected, which I'm assuming is just providing a vacuum.

Can anyone tell me whether these assumptions are right and how I can identify the proximity of the connections and sensors.

An I assuming too much here that I can run this thing standalone or do I need to hard wire in some of the components which are located on the fuse board?
