How To Wire A Relay
2 Attachment(s)
I always have a problem trying to remember how to wire up a relay, So after searching the web for the 398574097236 time I came across this. Its the best digram I have seen yet! Relay Wiring Diagram A relay is typically used to control a component that draws high amperage. The relay allows full power to the component without needing a switch that can carry the amps. The switch only controls the relay. The relay then provides a direct connection to the battery. It should be noted that either the power(86) or ground(85) in the relay control circuit can be switched. In the case of a horn, the horn button would be used to switch the ground lead(85) and power(86) would be provided directly from the fuse box. This is a typical wiring diagram for a standard relay installed for headlights, horn, fuel pump, electric fan, etc. If the relay has a 5th terminal, it is not used. good one bobby nice find

That does help. But you should remember the 87a contact is energized when the coil is off(switch is off). Comes in handy depending on how your wiring things.

What about three pin relays?

this was more or less so that I could find it next time I need to wire a relay. :D I do it every time, sit there staring at the relay and eventually say f-it and go search on the net for how to wire it... Every time! You would think by now I would have it memorized. :D |
how bout 5 pin relays...:tttt:
|
I got lots of 6 pin relays.
I might even got some 8 pin relays around. And lets not forget solid state relays. :ok1: ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- If there's really demand, I could make some diagrams... |

so would that be a n/o relay or a n/a relay? :humm:

Most 8 pin relays are DPDT. Two switches operated by one coil. What about NPN and PNP transistors? should we go into detail? lol |
..Starting to get confusing. I thinks I needs to go back to school.
:ok1: |
There are good explanations and diagrams showing how to wire relays:

I would like to recommend :
www.the12volt.com Everything you need to know about wiring accessories like alarms, remote starts, stereos, relays and diodes. It's very helpful to novices and advanced- pro's don't might need it.:pca1: |
