Painted stock wheels

I’ve been noticing there seems to be an interest in painting stock wheels (Aluminum or steel) .
I was running some 33” mud tires on some Cragar soft 8’s with about 4.5” of BS.
Unfortunately, I had a separation on one of the tires I was running, which has bumped up my need to get rolling on this project.

My plan now is to use the Stock aluminum wheels with some 35” mud tires on them, I also have to get my 2” KORE leveling kit put on.

For the stock aluminum wheels, paint prep is pretty simple. They are clear coated, so no need for self etching primer on them. Also, if the clear coat isn’t chipped away too badly, a light scuff with a scotchbrite pad is all that will be required for prep. Make sure you thoroughly wash the wheels first! That’s probably the hardest part of the required prep.

Here are some photos taken during the process on my wheels.

I got the “Inexpensive” paint for this project. It is Flat Black, costs about $2.00 a can and is available at Auto Zone.

Here is a wheel after it has been cleaned (Soap and water) make sure to allow it to thoroughly dry.

Scuffing the wheel with a Scotchbrite pad. Only spent about 5 minutes per wheel.

Ready for paint

Begin painting the inside of the wheel first, I only applied one good coat there.

Finish with the outside of the wheel, here I applied 2 good coats. You will use 1 can of paint (Approx) for each wheel. Here they are drying.

Yes they Are!:U:

And Thank you for the compliment! :pals:

All of these mods were done to my truck over the course of the last year. Some of the camera picture dates give away when they were actually completed.

There is also one on installing an Alien Patrol bumper with a Warn 16 K winch, but I'm hesitant to post it. Dunno if you want that over here.

Hopefully, I'll be installing these wheels soon... still saving for tires! :D

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing! Looks good Bill, How did the paint hold up on the bead after the tire guys got through with mounting and balancing? That's my only concern with the painting.
