7.3 Power Stroke versus 7.3 non turbo
I was wondering for Ford's 7.3L engine at what year did they offer a turbo for the F250 and F350 models? Which is honestly better for long term durablity- turbo or no turbo? At what specific date for the 7.3 did they offer a turbo? When was the engine computer controlled compared with all mechanic which I suppose is more relaible? I don't want to spend a ton of cash everytime need to buy a part. Is turbo and engine computer controled in the 1995 truck?
I saw a 1995, F350 that was an automatic with 152,000 miles, 7.3 turbo, 4 door crew cab, long bed (long bed came from a sinle tank truck, but seller was going create another fuel top by cutting the exteior sheet metal. All this $4500. Paul |

They had the 7.3IDI with a turbo in 93 and early 94. They went to the powerstroke in 94.5.

You want a POWERSTROKE... Not an IDI...
About the only thing a IDI is good for is a Farm truck... They will start about everytime, are cheap, no maintance... but also NO POWER... would struggle to get out of there own way. |
Well actually speaking of a farm truck, I own 4 acres in the Redlands (South West Miami, FL) and had planned to get a truck forfarm use. So I guess IDI will work for me.

IDI would be fine if your tooling around on the farm, they run forever, need little maintance and are cheap.
But dont expect to hook to a load of hay and get anywhere fast. Your in it for the long haul with an IDI. |

I have a "new" questions: How come you see very few 4X4 F250 and F350 Diesel pickups? While this 1991 7.3 L IDI does'nt have a turbo, can I easily add one with not much cost? Would one be easy to install a turbo? What other upgrades can I do to the stock engine? 300,000 miles is'nt a lot of miles if typical wear parts have been repaired / replaced as nessary? Thanks Paul

If you're going to do that, just get a powerstroke and forget the IDI. They can't take much boost and still don't make squat for power even with a turbo. They are worlds better with a turbo, but still nothing impressive by today's standards. I watched a 7.3 IDI with a turbo on the dyno at our local dyno day this past year, it did something like 190hp and 250 ft/lbs... |
