New to the Diesel World. Please Help

I purchased a 2004 F250 6.0 diesel 6 months ago. It has 104,000 miles on it. I use it to tow a camper. Does the 6.0 diesel naturally have poor acceleration? I have nothing to compare the performance to. All of my trucks have been gas engines up until now. My friend has a 1999 F350 with the 7.3 diesel. His truck has great jump compared to mine. I know there should be some lag but my truck feels very slow. Should I be able to break the tires loose if I floor my truck? Does a stock 7.3 have a much faster acceleration than the 6.0? My truck was fully serviced by a Ford dealer. They said everything is fine. The horsepower and torque figures are higher for the 6.0 liter. I thought it would be faster. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you souldn't be able to burn the tires off, but it should pick up and go pretty good. is there anything done to the truck?

As far as I know the truck is stock. It was always serviced at the Ford dealership.

Your turbo might need to be cleaned. The VGT vaines can get stuck and not spool. do you have any smoke coming out the back end when you walk on it?

No smoke. I might need to drive another 6.0 and compare. It may be that I am just used to a gas truck. I will check the turbo. Hopefully there is a post on this site telling me what to look for and how to fix it.

How do you clean the turbo? I am an aircraft mechanic, but I haven't had much experience with diesels.

Just found out my coupler hose from the Turbo output to the downpipe has a 1 inch hole in it. I'm no expert, but I bet that was killing my performance. $100.00 from Ford is crazy for that small hose.

BD Boost Builder

Torn boot... that will do it every time and is very common.

The 6.0L will not release all the fuel until 3-4 PSI creating a dead spot on acceleration to prevent heavy black smoke, this will get worse with a torn turbo to intercooler boot or course. BD offers a Boost Builder you can install and run for about $100.00 (30 min install) and almost a full second gain in a quarter mile, not that you are drag racing but no more guessing at those tight intersections or merging onto the the hwy.

Hope this helps

Thanks I will try that. I keep blowing the lower hose off now. Is there a trick to attaching the hoses? How tight is too tight? Is it possible that I have a restriction after the downpipe?

Once they come off once they are prone to keep coming off... they fail because of the oil saturation caused from the crank case residue, then when they come off the residue gets on the pipes making it hard to get them to ever seal again. If re-using the stock boots... clean the oil residue off the inner boot and the tube with a brake cleaner best you can, spray some hairspray on the tube which will help it slip on if your quick enough and can help create a better seal, believe it or not, the tighter the clamps the better without breaking them clamp of course.

I recommend upgrading the kit to a Heavy Duty Boot and Clamp kit for whats its worth. High quality boots with heavy duty-spring loaded clamps that you can crank until they bottom out.

I you want to eliminate the root cause, install a Crank Case Vent kit and the new boot kit, problem will never return and your turbo and intercooler will love you for it :)
