1986 Ford Ranger Diesel

I am looking at buying a 1986 ford ranger diesel, don't know any thing about them and was wondering if anyone knew anything good or bad about them. I have not yet looked at it but the body is ruff and will probably be putting the engine into a 4x4 ranger. What years will that engine mount up to the tranny and transfer case? the truck is 2 wheel drive. Thanks

Oh and mods sorry if(I am pretty sure it is) in the wrong place

they get decent mileage from what ive read, a friend of mine has one, it runs great.

I have been driving one for about 6 months the first month i had it it was slow but by turning up the fuel and plugging the waste gate i gained a lot of power and make about 27 lbs of boost! Oh and it make black smoke

I moved it here not a powerstoke but i guess this would be the best place for the thread :)

if they are the same bellhousing as a 2.3 four cylinder and a 2.9 V6, they will bolt to any of the transmissions......i think a 5 speed would be better than an automatic....

That is the little Mitsubishi TD that was used in the Little Dodge D50's/mitsubishi Mighty max. The engine designation is the 4D55. I know they were pretty solid in the little Mighty Max as my uncle had 2 that went well beyond 300,000.

You sure? I had heard they were little Cat engines.

It was either the Mitsubishi 4D55 or the Kumitoyo(sp?) for which I have no information.

The 4D55 is a good little engine. I have one in a '83 D50 4x4 that is rock solid reliable and gets great economy.

Parts and maintenance items are readily available for the Mitsu---I have a buddy in Omaha with a Ranger/Kumitoyo(sp?) setup, will try to get some info from him.

Yep they are little Mitsu Diesels. The N/A ones were Mazdas.

You End Up Finding One? I'd be Curious If They Remain In Existence.

If you want some more info you can go to thernagerstation.com and the tech section is great for any thing to do with rangers and broncoIIs:U:

I have a 1986 Ford Ranger with a Mitsubishi 455TD that I am thinking about selling. I am the third owner and have every record for the vehicle from the day it was purchased at the dealer. I also have the complete set of the factory Ford manuals that will go with the truck. I enjoy working on small diesels and purchased this truck not running with a leaking injector pump a few years back. I had the pump rebuilt and put a complete new timing set along with a fuel pump on the truck. The truck is in the low 100K on mileage, has new tires and runs great. However, I have two many vehicles at the house and need to make some room. I am asking $3,500 for the truck. Let me know if you are interested by pm.

Thank You..

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I'm interested in your Ranger. Could I call you to talk about it??

dieselnutga 04-28-2013 04:14 PM

IVORSPARKS....I still have the truck if interested. Send me a PM if you would like to discuss.

Montgomery P-Stroke 05-03-2013 10:32 PM

Just curious if these trucks are as slow as the old Isuzu pup's if you have any experience with them. I may be interested but have never drove or even seen a diesel Ranger in person. I know the Isuzu that my brother drives has to be to the floor to even think about keeping up with city traffic. Even driving it like a madman it still gets 28 mpg which is much better than both our 7.3's. Pm me some pics if you don't mind or call me at 912-429-0172. I'm in Savannah so its not too far away. What kind of mpg does it get?

dieselnutga 01-08-2017 09:32 PM

Montgomery P-Stroke & ivorsparks,

Believe it or not, I still have the 86 Ranger and would be willing to sell it. If you're interested, send me a PM. I promise I'll keep a check on my inbox this time if anyone else is interested. :tu:

I always thought the rangers were a Perkins diesel? Did they have other options? My buddy has a Perkins we have removed from a ranger

dieselnutga 01-09-2017 09:22 AM

From what I understand, a four-cylinder 59 hp 2.2 L Mazda/Perkins diesel was available up to 1985, then in 1986, a Mitsubishi-built 2.3 L turbo-diesel (4D55) with 86 hp replaced the Mazda/Perkins diesel engine.

Ford was in talks with CAT before thay came out with their own diesel, (F250, 350) but wanted CAT to change the motor castings to match Fords motor mounts, but CAT refused, so the deal fell thru. Most of the little truck diesels at that time were Japenese in origin.
