It looks like a ATS ported housing on the stock turbo.

gixxertricks 09-27-2010 12:08 PM

if that is the case what is the significance of that?

nydiver 09-27-2010 08:07 PM

It eliminates or at the least greatly reduces turbo surge. The larger ported opening has the potential to allow more air to be available for compression while also allowing for easier release of over pressurized air resulting from the fast release of the throttle.

Does it boost performance, maybe, but very slightly. Has more to do with fixing an issue than really bumping up performance. I'm currently working toward playing with a couple I have, pulling a base line from the stock turbo, install the shroud and pull a as-cast, then I'll polish the internals and do another pull, then finally I'll really port it out and do another pull, finally I'll install a wicked wheel and start over with another ported housing and see what differences I see.

ive done a lot of research since i posted. i feel like im in diesel school on here. its awesome. thanks for the info. let me know what your findings are.

It does nothing for performance, just helps stop surge. Good product, just WAY over priced. And ATS is crap to work with.

gixxertricks 10-01-2010 04:32 PM

what do mean its crap to work with you mean company wise or parts wise?

Unless they have finally fixed there castings, they are rough, and have all kinds of casting issues. If you find something you are concerned about, ATS pulls there typical "your lying we are great" crap and it takes forever to get it fixed!

Rough isn't a problem persay, they are "As Cast" meaning they did minimal finish work to them. Does it suck if you think your getting a smooth, polished unit and that shows up? Yes. Is it a casting issue? No. Look at the garret parts, the exhaust housing I received was in similar condition, I ended up having to hand smooth it out to get the effect I wanted.

Talk to me after you pull chunks of casting out of one, or wash it further and get all the sand out. The molds are junk... You can only cast so many before you need to re-tool
