Need Help with rear end.
 

Hello every one.
About 1 month ago I had some rear end work done on the 08 F 450. They replaced a carrier bearing and a part of the eaton locker. At the time they said ever thing else in the rear end was good INCLUDING THE RING AND PINION GEAR. They had to re do all the shims and every thing in the rear end. Now 2,000 miles later the rear end is making a whining noise and I brought the truck back to them. Tonight I talked to them and they say it needs a new RING AND PINION FOR $1,800. How can a rear end go bad in 2,000 Miles???????? :-arrgh:-arrgh:-arrgh

Sorry if I seem pissed but I am about to loose it.

Do you guys think that they messed up when they put it back together.

nick fight this sounds like someone didnt set the preload/shim the diff correctly.
maybe try another dealers opnion or have them call a rep?

And why isn't this under warranty? If they said it was good to go then, there really isn't any reason for it to burn up like that. Unless you are running so much 'extra' horse power that it can't handle it. Or you abused it and tore it up?
Have you opened it up to see what it looks like? You can see the ring gear and should be able to tell if it is ok or not. If you can, get us some pics!

(We got lucky: The first one I ever did in school last year went together the first time. I can see how you would have to put it together, check it and then take it apart and re-shim it several times to get it right. I can provide a link for you if you want info on how to do it correctly.)

Why isnt it covered under warrenty? But it definatly sounds like it was put together wrong.

They're eating that one, that's for sure.

That S110 is NOT a cheap axle to repair.

The dealer should warranty there work for more than 2000 miles.:dang: sounds to me like something is rotten in Denmark. :bat: Just an expression.

Your state attorney general is another good one to contact if BBB can't help. A rear axle is something that doesn't ever have problems like that as long as it is set up correctly. If it were re-assembled incorrectly, then I can see it eating itself pretty quickly. If you abused it, maybe you could tear it up that fast also.... You know whether that is what happened to it or not.

(My sister as a 'dumb college student' has a similar story: She took the car in to see if they could find out what was causing it to run bad. She told them not to do anything without asking first as she was a 'poor' college student.
When they came to get her out of the waiting room, he told her it was really a good thing she had come in that day. "Your engine oil was so dirty that we had to change it. It is really good that you came in and you shouldn't run it that long without changing it". She couldn't believe it. She told him that couldn't be as she had just changed it. He insisted that it hadn't been changed and that she was going to have to pay for them doing it. She also noticed that they put in an air filter (Or at least the bill said so!). She got an idea and asked him to come out to the car and 'inspect' it with her. When she opened the hood she found the Fram that she had just put in the Sat before. She told him that was strange.... "I wouldn't have thought that you as a GM dealer would be using Fram products". Evidently the idiot glazed right over the part where she stated that SHE HAD JUST DONE THE OIL CHANGE HERSELF that last weekend. Apparently girls aren't ever caught under a hood doing such things..... The only thing she did wrong that day is to not take that bill with her. She should have taken it right to the attorney general! Makes you wonder how often these idiots were pulling this routine. This is a large Chevy dealer in our state.... Well, I really don't know if they are still around or not. I don't use them, so I wouldn't know. Something to think about next time you 'smell' something weird. Maybe it is wrong and you should get paperwork from them!)
