Improve MPG

I have an 02 F250 7.3L and I am looking for ways to improve my gas mileage. I have 35" tires and about 150k miles. Any suggestions? p.s. I do not know the ins and outs under the hood like most of you.

Johnny Cetane 04-30-2008 11:43 AM

:hi: :c:

I'm going to move this to the general Ford section to get some better exposure for you.

Basic stuff is to keep up on your maintenance. Replace the air and fuel filters as needed. Those 35" tires aren't helping anything. Dropping down a few sizes would help. You could switch to synthetic oil and axle lube too.

Thanks Johnny.

You ought to fill out your signature too. Then we know what has been done to your truck and can better suggest some other things to try like a programmer and exhaust..... :up2:

Welcome to DB.

yeah even adding fuel treatment, intake, 4inch exhaust, and a nice programmer will help you get better mpg.

also maybe slide a brick underneath the accelerator

:U: Good idea!

I finally broke down and started using cruise control, something I've refused for years to do because it just doesn't feel like driving! But I did get better mileage, so I'll keep usin' it.

Thanks Johnny, now I'm off to find it

Well

the best way to find a noticeable increase is to do multiple things to reach your goal. The installation of an exhaust, intake and a good chip helps a bunch. I ran consistantly 16 stock. I put a 4" straight pipe, Ford AIS intake and a DP flip chip on and ran consistantly 18-19 when I kept my foot out. I did use the Ford fuel additive too. But your not going to run 18-19 with those tires unless you run 55mph everywhere. But its possible to get 1-2mpg which in the end adds up.

I have a 2wd - I have kept stock size tires, goign to level the rear with the front to make it lower, put on a bed cover, done the zoodad and intake, 4" exhaust, and economy tune on the chip -- so far I'm getting around 20 on the hwy @ 70 OR LESS!

the biggest thing you can do is GET RID OF THOSE TIRES :) and slow down - keep the R's below 2500 at all times and around 2K when cruising at hwy speeds... you will see siginificant gains then

slowtowpig 05-13-2008 02:59 PM

instead of buying a complete exhaust just straight pipe it, that will save you $$$ a superchips programmer isnt much for performance but its good for upping you mpg. adding an intake system will help out also. power service in the grey bottle is pretty good in boosting you mpg. you tires will only hurt your mpg in stop in go driving but when you get out on th road thay will lower your rpm's(almost acting like a set of hwy gears). but all in all if you had smaller tires it im sure it would help some.

Love my 37's for milage on the hwy.... Turnin 1700 at 68mph... Intake, Exhaust, Chip... Even some AC injectors might give you a mile or so per gallon more.

Hi.. I am new to here as well... got my 01 Ford F250 w/ 7.3L and loved it... when I do tow something I really don't notice something back there... but it's my daily driver and I travel 40 miles to work round trip... if I run only 60 I manage to get around 16 maybe 17 mpg... what can I do to better this... I have this Edge Evolution programmer that I run only in the performance mode if I want... I have thought about adding a tonneau cover and heard about openning up the air intake whole behind the grille helps... does it??? any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks

4.10 gears or something?

I'm turning about the same RPM's at the same speed on 315/70/17's. Going to a true 35x12.5x17 now. I love the 35's, my mileage has definitely improved, but I do mostly highway driving. I'd imagine around town this would drop it though.

The only way I know of this being even remotely possible, is Rev-X in a 6.0 that had sticky injectors.

Other than that, I don't see any oil or fuel additives actually increase mileage, and if it does, not by that much.

Limit your idling, most guys I know let their diesel truck idle for no reason:argh:

dvaka333 01-10-2012 11:45 PM

looking for a new programmer... more toward the lines of economy then torque or stuff like that... any names of some would be great.... what is the thoughts on the second generation edge evolution programmer... i heard it will allow you to boost mpg and also be a display for your extra gauges.... any thoughts on that one

Mdub707 01-11-2012 09:40 AM

For a 7.3 I would get a TS or DP tuner, 6 position.

Just by changing all my fluids and filters, a diy 6637 mod, and tire rotation and balance gained me about 3-4 mpg better depending on driving style. I know have a ts 6 position from php and it has dropped only because I'm not "used" to it yet.lol.but I've been running it on 140 and not hot rodding.
