Rear Axle Question
 

So I'm in the market for a truck that I can tow a 30' gooseneck with and I came across an 89 F-250 7.3 IDI.

It looked pretty good but I realized it's got the Ford 10.5 semi float rear end instead of the more common Ford 10.25 full float axle. My research has told me that its a lighter duty unit and came in trucks with a lower GVWR. Does anyone have any experience with this axel? Would I be ok to put a decent load on it? The truck isn't exactly what I'm looking for so I'm not gonna feel bad walking away from it if its not up to snuff.

it more than likely has the 10.25" full float axle and the light duty trucks had 3" wide brake shoes instead of the 3.5" shoes (the 10.5" full float is nearly the same axle that was introduced in the 99 model srw trucks, srw vans had 9.75" semi float)

This is definitely a semi float. The hubs stop at the wheel like on a 1/2 ton, not poke through the wheels like a full float.

well, the real question here is, whats the GVW on the truck, what is the GRAWR on the truck, and what is the GVW and hitch/5th wheel weight of your trailer?
if I were you, I'd be looking into the specs of my trailer. that semi floating axle may work just fine for what you need. may not.

Slim, the trailer is a homemade 30' bumper pull that my dad has so I don't know any if the specs for it. I'm gonna buy it off him and rebuild it, convert to gooseneck. I'm planning on putting tandem, single wheel 7k axles under it. It probably won't be towed often but I don't want to have to worry about losing my rear end every time I hook up either. I'll see if the seller is available tomorrow and check the door tag and get the weight ratings.

I'll check with my dad and see if he has anything stating the weight and weight ratings of the trailer as well, though I doubt he does.

he should have something stating the specs of the trailer.

any trailer where I live needs to have axle weight ratings, GVW, and TARE ratings (unloaded weight of the trailer, IIRC. It's been a while since I handled anything with a trailer) to get licensed.
