99 Ford 7.3L. 4R100 to 5R110 Conversion?

Hey there, I have a 1999 Ford 7.3L 4X4 with the 4R100 4-speed Automatic behind it.
The 4R100 just went out at 310,000miles.

And it just happens that I have a complete 2004 5R110 5-speed automatic with transfer case from a 6.0L.

Was wondering what it would take to put the 5R110 in place of the 4R100 tranny?.

They look fairly similar, 53" overall with transfer case. overall 19" wide at the front of both trans. even the sensor placement and connections look around the same (can't be to sure though haven't pulled the 4R100 out yet)

It looks like the major of seen differences to my eyes are- The front of the transmission on the 4R100 has a cutout at the bottom so you have access to the flexplate and torque converter. It has a dust cover that goes on it to keep grime out. The 5R110 does not have this cutout nor a dust cover.

I know I will have to have the PCM calibrated to recognize the 5R110.

-Questions-
I don't know yet if the bolt pattern is the same or different? (I will know when I pull the 4R100 out)

I'm not sure if I need a different Bell housing?

Since the 5R110 doesn't have the cutout access at the bottom for the flexplate to torque converter. I'm not sure how I would connect the flexplate to torque converter?

I know this conversion is possible I just don't know what all is involved and what I will need to complete the task.

I don't have sufficient funds to rebuild the 4R100 but I do have the complete 5R110 and tons of various parts. A truck and a half to be precise.

I know the overdrive is the same for both transmissions so I'm guessing that extra gear is there for better hauling. Better power to the ground ratio I believe also. at least that's what I've been told.

Any help or ideas is much appreciated!! I need to get back on the road! these rentals are killing me!.

Thanks again, kooper.

Think the bell housing's are different and you need some way to control it. Sell the 5R and rebuild the 4R

You have no idea how much trouble it would be to swap in that 5r...

Sell it and use the funds to get a BTS 4r100

Yea, and there wouldn't be a difference. Both the overdrive gears in the 4 and 5 are the same. To much money and time to switch it over.
Just part the 1 and a half trucks out and built the 4.

Agreed. It was just an idea since I had it already. I'll be rebuilding the 4R100 anyone have any good upgrades I can do to it to beef her up?

Thanks, Kooper.

John woods valve body, any type of deep pan and a 6.0 trans cooler. If you want it to last, all billet shafts.

BTS. last one you will ever buy.

ford heavy duty. 3 year, unlimited milage warranty!!! and i'm averageing 120k a year, so we'll see how she holds up!!! and waaaaaay cheaper than any other one out there. trust me, i priced them all. and most were a 2 or 3 week wait, i had my ford one in 1 or 2 days. good luck...btw, i think it came in just under 3k.

if it made it 310000 first time around probably just needs a good overhaul and no "beefing" required.

It's been awhile since I've been on here but here's the final word.

Sold the 5R110 and components.

Rebuilt my 4R100, went with the Suncoast Xtreme Rebuild kit. Wasn't impressed with it, had missing items and didn't include several things that should have been with it. I'll never buy a Suncoast kit again...

New Suncoast Torque converter. I do like it, works very well. :jump:

other then that, new solenoid, wiring harness and I added an external transmission oil filter assembly. flushed the oil cooler and such.
