When should I start worrying about heat and boost

Hey guys,

Here is the deal. I've had my 2001 7.3l beast since November. I've done some basic's, 4inch MBRP strait pipe, gauges(EGT, boost, trans temp) and a FU chip from Power Hungry performance. If I were to put wings on it, I might fly. :jump:

So now here is where I'm starting to get concerned. Doesn't matter if I'm in the 80hp daily driver tune or the 140 extreme setting, I see upwards close to 1400degrees pre turbo(not for long, maybe a second at most) when I get into it pretty good and along with that 27ish pounds of boost. Should I be concerned? Its getting to the point where I just don't get into it cause I'm worried about messing something up.

So my real question is, what can I do to lower EGT's first . . . and then ensure my turbo can handle the boost its getting without going full out ball bearing . . .

Thanks guys

1250 deg thats when you should watch your etgs thats when if left that high of temp damage could happen and 22 psi is the max ford will allow you stock i think you have to mess with the computer and turbo to run higher psi so you should be good just be careful on your etgs and dont dog it to hard if you dog it, it will put a ton of pressure on the motor

to lower temp try a cold air intake methanol injection kit, bigger turbo will help lower temp

that's all i relay know hope this helps i haven't gotten that far with motor work

boost is good...

EGTs, 1250 for extended periods of time will cause problems... If you go over for a second, not gonna hurt.

Man you are fine as long as you dont hold over 1400 for long periods. I see 1800* every time I florr it. (6.4) my friends 7.3 did blow the turbo but he had it around 1600 for a really long time trying to get out of a field.

He didnt blow the turbo due to EGT's... Your not watching EGT's to protect the turbo, but the aluminum pistons in the motor.

You could feed that turbo 2000* temps for hours and not hurt it.

Alright Big Red, what can I do to avoid "pop-bang" part of the equation?

Bigg Redd 05-10-2012 12:02 AM

Well the above translates to me going crazy with an 04 psd lifted 4x4 before getting my CTD listed in my sig. It was fun, fast, with cool mods, until it went "POP-BANG" etc.... Then the cha-ching came with a $5,100 dollar repair bill. I abused it..... a little. Just take it easy with the EGT's. I learned the hard way! :ouch:
