Brake Controller
What do you guys recommend? I'm going to be hauling at max a 7k lb tandem axle car hauler. Basically just using it to haul 4-5 motorcycles on occasion.

i have a prodigy and i like it. but just go to a local trailer place and see what they think.

According to the reviews, prodigy appears to be a nice controller.
I decided to go middle ground and buy a Tekonsha Voyager controller. Hopefully I don't regret it, but then again not really sure how often I'm really going to need it... |
for towing light you should be fine.

I have the hopkins agility, it can control up to 8 axles of breaks, works fine for me and its available at most local parts houses for under $100 and the quick conect wiring plug is about $15.

Just to update. I just returned from the trip with a 14K lb equipment tandem axle trailer in tow on a 10" (10,000lb) drop hitch. I'm running about 7 inches of lift, 37" military tires, and still have the factory 3.73's with the a 6spd truck. I had five motorcycles on the trailer (3 cruisers including a 2300cc Triumph and 2 lighter standards), a couple of loaded coolers, tool box, two trailer spares, one truck spare, and the bed loaded with gear. We weighed in at 14K lbs.
I towed at 70-75mph and through the Smokey Mountains averaging 12.99-13mpg. The brake controller worked just fine. Towing was great, truck just pulled and pulled. Had to keep it in 5th climbing the mountains to keep the egt's around 1100F or below. Other than that, perfectly fine. |
i've run about 5 different brake controllers, and no matter how heavy you tow or how light, prodigy is the only one worth a dam imo. i had my first wreck last year in 12 years of cdl driving because of one of the cheap under 100 dollar boxes. buy the best prodigy one they make (they aren't cheap-i think i paid $180 for mine) but they have a lifetime warranty i believe. only one that i tried that has proportioning brakeing which is a must and you can switch between hydraulic and electric brakes in a couple of seconds which is nice option for me.
