Truck keeps dying

Just need some advice truck will run fine for awhil and then die on me usually running down highway. Wait to start, service engine soon and water in fuel all flash on dash, if I turn key off and try to restart it will start fine and sometimes run a mile or 30 miles. Put snap-on scan tool and read p0606 (PCM fault) and p1211 (pressure to high/low) talked to a "mechanic" he said ICP and fuel filter, changed both still same problem just happening morefrequent. Please any help or advice would be great.

Has the cps ever been replaced? Have you ever messes with the PCM under the dash?

P1211 is directly related to your IPR (injection pressure regulator) which is controlled directly by your PCM. If HPOP pressure is 410psi above or 280psi below desired pressure for more than 7.5 seconds, which is dependant on the condition of the HPOP and %/condition of the IPR. HPOP (high pressure oil pump) pressure should be anywhere from 500psi to start to 4000psi MAX.

If you can get a scanner and see your IPR % that would help greatly. it should be 14% at key on engine off, 8-16% at idle, and less than 50% at full load.

you should remove the IPR (located on the drivers side, back of the HPOP) and inspect the inlet screen for blockage. If the IPR tests outside of the specs i listed, and the high pressure oil system has no leaks, replace the IPR and see what happens. If not, the code you got for your PCM usually indicates a PCM failure.

let us know what you find :tu:

Your mechanic was on the right track with the ICP sensor, and yea it's always good to change the fuel filter. Also have him verify fuel system pressure for good measure.

I changed the IPR today, and truck still died. I did not have the scanner with me today so could not check pressures. Talked to a ford diesel mechanic locally here and explained to him the problem. I bought the truck used and was told it was stock. The ford guy told me to pull the PCM and look for a plug chip. I pulled PCM and found a chip and removed it and truck started fine. I was told those chips can go bad, so i will hook scanner up tomorrow. Thanks for your help

I bet the chip wasn't seated completely leaving a weird connection...

What kind of chip was it?

sometimes with a piggyback (the chip you found) if it has a bad connection it'll completely shut the truck off. sometimes it'll restart and sometimes it wont, they're picky like that.

and yea x2 what chip was it?:humm:

Ok I'm back with a new problem on 01 F250 7.3l. Driving down the road the service engine soon light comes on and vehicle loses power. I turn key off and restart runs fine until SES light comes on and process starts all over. The further I drive the more frequent it comes on. Put scan tool on and had following codes. P1211(ICP) p1209(ICP) 1241 p0733. I changed ICP and IPR in feb 2012 any suggestions would be great I forgot truck has 251k miles

change the PCM there less than an IPC.
