99 ford 7.3 wont start been sitting for 2 years!!!

hey guys my name is justin i have a couple ?'s ok so i bought a 99 ford f-350 7.3 diesel its been sitting for about 2 years but it only has 75k miles on it. so here is my ?'s i put new battery's in it and drained the fuel andput a new fuel filter in. but still wont start its cold outside so i have it plugged in but nothing. it turns over but dont fire so i shot some starting fluid in it and got it to fire up but dont stay running unless using starting fluid. i have new diesel fuel and it come up to the fuel filter, so i need your guys help to go from there to get my truck going. any help would greatly appreciate it

03Powerstroke 01-15-2012 08:43 PM

NEVER use starting fluid:scare2::scare2:

iron cowboy 01-15-2012 08:50 PM

yeah i know but that was the only thing that would get it to start but wont stay running

fletch0467 01-17-2012 11:55 AM

How cold is it where you live? sounds like from sitting 2 years fuel lines, injection pump and injectors could be clogged up with old fuel ???? Just my 2 cents :humm:

iron cowboy 01-17-2012 12:17 PM

Yesterday it was like 40 when I got home but today they are calling for snow I took the fuel fillter off and I have fresh diesel coming up to the filter how would I check to make sure injectors are getting new diesel and another problem to add is on the dash the glow plug light don't come on anymore? Any help please

fletch0467 01-17-2012 12:48 PM

I dont know about that without being there and looking at it. Have you checked out powerstroke.org Lots of great info and mechanics in there. They can really help you with this. In their forum look for 7.3 motor problems....:tu:

95powersmoker 01-18-2012 02:49 PM

If the wait to start light isn't coming on, unplug your fuel bowl heater, check all your fuses. Replace the blown fuse that isn't allowing your truck to start, I believe it's number 30...

Also, make sure your oil is good and full.

Lastly, to clear up a post above, Powerstroke's do NOT have injection pumps so don't go searching for one..

And I'm moving this to the 7.3 section for ya since you are not a potential diesel owner anymore..

CSIPSD 01-18-2012 04:35 PM

Have you checked the oil? 7.3's use the motor oil to fire the injectors, if your low or out it will not fire.

From what your explaning you have a High Pressure Oil issue.

1999stroker 01-18-2012 05:17 PM

Did you try testing batteries and testing starter? Also check your gpr and glow plugs just for sure.

CSIPSD 01-18-2012 06:42 PM

If its cranking then its not the batterys or starter...

If it fires off starter fluid then its not the glow plugs...

No smoke means no oil... HPO issue.

fordornothing 01-18-2012 08:01 PM

would that be a bad IPR? or the HPOP?

1999stroker 01-18-2012 08:04 PM

Oh my dumbness is kicking in sorry.

ok so update i have replace the #30 fuse and it was blown so i re3placed it and now glow plug light comes on but still no start i have replaced the batteries and i did check the high presser oil pump and its good so i still dont know also i can crank and crank but still no smoke out of the tail pipe and i dont have any warning lights or service lights that show on the dash so any more ideas? and thanks guys for trying to help me get my truck up and going also if ya need to call or text me ya can 574-952-2200 thanks again

CSIPSD 01-18-2012 09:32 PM

If your not getting any smoke, your not getting the injectors firing.

Meaning High Pressure oil is not up to the required 400psi to even fire the injectors...

Or you have a IDM problem.

Need a scanner to check ICP pressures and duty cycle... Also run a buzz test.

My bet is still on a High Pressure Oil issue.

iron cowboy 01-18-2012 09:35 PM

ok couple ? what is IDM? and how do i do a buzz test? and ill take the plug off the high pressure oil pump and double check the oil level

gradyc 01-18-2012 10:21 PM

IDM is the injector driver module. It is the electronic device that feeds power to the injectors to make them fire, It is located inside the left front fender by the drivers door. a buzz test is only possible with a tester designed for the powerstrokes. I have an autoenginuity tester which works with a laptop but there are other good scan tools that will do it also. Autoenginuity is the most cost effective and upgradeable tester on the market right now.

99stackedpowerstroke 01-18-2012 10:55 PM

where abouts are you located? maybe somebody on here is close to you and can help ya in person, but ya id put a gauge on the hpop and make sure youre getting proper pressure, when mine acted that way first time was hpop second time was hpop and injector orings, but if u can get ur hands on a scanner u wont need the gauge.

iron cowboy 01-19-2012 05:17 AM

I am located in Walkerton Indiana am what kind of gauge would I need? Just like a compression gauge? And the pressure I need that's 400? And next ? What would be a good scanner to get?

1999stroker 01-19-2012 06:12 AM

Auto engenuity with ford package

iron cowboy 01-19-2012 08:41 AM

How much is it?

1999stroker 01-19-2012 08:54 AM

Idk for sure I want to say 400 if not more.I know power hungry performance sells them.

iron cowboy 01-19-2012 10:28 AM

Ok what about a scanner?

99stackedpowerstroke 01-19-2012 10:56 AM

That is the scanner, u dowload it on ur laptop and it scans everything you need it to. Basically a hydraulic guage and bout 2 feet of hose and the adapter to check th hpop. Or just buy the scanner he was talkin bout and check everything at once.

CSIPSD 01-19-2012 04:20 PM

If you try and build a manual HPO gauge it will need to be rated for 4k...

iron cowboy 01-19-2012 07:45 PM

ok guys new problem just happened everytime i turn the key on to let the gp's warm up i blow the #30 fuse what would this be from?

Fuel bowl heater... Like i said before unplug it and replace the fuse...

iron cowboy 01-19-2012 08:31 PM

ok i did that and its good now but still no start but my dad had a cheap scanner from advance auto but it didnt show any codes and warning light isnt on either any other ideas? also on the high pressure oil pump u say that has to be full but there is no level indicator but when i looked into the hole its about a half inch from the bottom of the hole do i need to fill it up to the top? or does there need to be a air gap?

gradyc 01-20-2012 12:47 AM

The cheep scanners will not read the codes on a powerstroke. I got my autoenginuity from someone on ebay used and it works great. If you know someone with an old scuba high pressure gauge it works great for testing the high pressure oil. All you need is the standard high pressure gauge and an adapter to go from the 7/16 threads to 1/2 inch o-ring threads that you can get from a dive shop. Most scuba high pressure gauges are 5000 psi. If you do use a scuba gauge DO NOT EVER USE IT FOR DIVING AGAIN because there will always be oil left in it which will cause lung problems if it is used for diving. The oil being 1 inch from the top is fine so that is not the problem.

99stackedpowerstroke 01-20-2012 02:12 AM

Leave fuel bowl heater unplugged from now on, you don't need it and ul just keep blowing fuses

vadeerhunter 01-20-2012 02:11 PM

riffraff diesel has great price for scanner/ford bundle. just plug it and and you can run all kinds of tests.

jamoffroad 01-20-2012 07:16 PM

check rhe cps.... cheap if it works only 25 at auto zone...

99stackedpowerstroke 01-21-2012 03:11 AM

Does the tach move when you crank it? If not then cam position sensor is bad what ^ is talking about, and if it is, don't get I from there it will fail again if you read threads about em u will read that, CSIPSD knows the name of the good ones I don't off hand,

iron cowboy 01-22-2012 09:33 AM

ok thanks guys i cant remember if the tach moves when i crank it but i will be headed out to the garage in just a min and i will let ya know what i find out

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

ok guys the tach does not move when im cranking it over!?!?!

99stackedpowerstroke 01-22-2012 10:01 AM

Then your cps is bad, look at front of motor from under neath, u will see a small sensor with a metal tab, with 2 wires going to it, should be close to middle motor If I remember correctly, I believe its like an 8mm bolt, u can get em at local parts store for fairly cheap, but they tend to fail, so expect to be buying another better one in future but it will get you by.

iron cowboy 01-22-2012 08:48 PM

hey guys i want to thank you for all the help you guys helped me get her running :c::jump: it turned out to be the cps but it wasnt bad it just so happened that mice like the middle wire on the plug lol so i i fixed that and jumped in and she fired right up thanks again guys

99stackedpowerstroke 01-22-2012 10:49 PM

Glad you got her runnin!! :jump: any pics of it up yet??

iron cowboy 01-23-2012 10:10 PM
