4Wheel drive problem

I have a friend with a 2000 F350 and he is having a problem with the four wheel drive it goes in just fine but once it is in it doesn't want to disengage at all. are there any ideas of what it may be.

try backing up a little, but also you have to back STRAIGHT up. dont ask me why, but mine is a pain in the ass at times to get it out of 4x4 also. if you find something else, please let us know...

OceanDiesel 11-15-2011 09:39 PM

My E99 is that way too. Back straight up or it just won't let go.

yeah, i found out the hard way the very 1st time i locked in my hubs on my 01. i was in vermont, left to come back to pa and the dang thing felt like the front end was riding rough. little did i know, with the hubs locked out and the switch in the 2 wheel drive postion, the hubs never unlocked! guess i never really had to back up the whole way home, so it made sense! live and learn, right?

The transfer case that he has in his truck is electrical shift in and out and when we put it in it goes in just fine with lockin the hubs in and when you take them out and back up the hubs release but the t case doesnt shift out when you switch it out.

Mine had been like this since new. I have to force myself to slow down when taking it out of 4X4. I back up on a level road. Then I stop completely. Put the transmission in neutral. Let off the brake and turn the 4X4 selector to 2wheel drive. I have had several customers with this same problem and this has always worked.....

Ok sweet i will try that in the morning and let you know if that works. Thanks for the help

IMO, the electric switch is a joke. I don't know what is so hard about reaching down to pull a lever but i guess it's to complicated for most. yes my pickup has it. but it's going away pretty soon. and if it's really cold out, ie. 5* F or lower. it will not engage or disengage. it pretty much locks up the actuator.

fordornothing do u like ur six speed AND is it just cut the floor pan and swap for ur transfer or are u gonna ad a lever too the electronic t/c? id MUCH rather have a manual t/c:tu:

fordornothing 11-16-2011 08:22 PM

you have to swap the whole t/c and a short wiring harness. There is actually already a hole in the floor pan. it has a cover plate that is screwed down and has the nastiest glue on it. you need a chisel and a BFH to get the plate off.
and i do like my 6 speed.

CMCA Swartzkrautheim 11-16-2011 08:44 PM

so basically i should look for a truck 6speed manual tc n take whole unit n put in my truck right lol cant wait for taxes!!!

wmorrispilot 11-17-2011 10:16 AM

Its not like We specifically went out and bought our trucks just because it has electric switch on the 4X4. it just wasn't a deal breaker to me. I have yet to have it not go into 4X4 even when it was 20 below last winter. it is just a pain in the arssssssss to get it to shit out ....... so no its not a big deal to pull on the t-case handle if you have one but I am not changing mine out just because of this situation...........

I found some pretty basic directions on how to switch in and out of 4x4. Hope it helps. Though i would share .

Instructions

1
Check to see if you have manual hubs and that they are in "free" mode.

2
Put your vehicle into four-wheel high mode.

3
Drive forward for about a quarter of a mile.

4
Stop the vehicle and shift from four-wheel to two-wheel drive.

5
Place the vehicle in reverse and drive backwards for 15 to 20 feet.

6
Drive the vehicle forward slowly to allow the loosened shims to disengage.

it wasn't as deal breaker to me either. but hell mine won't go into 4 low.

CMCA Swartzkrautheim 11-17-2011 09:08 PM

fordornothing my uncles got an 01 thats got a prob gettin into low it normally will engage when you switch too Low in drive or park THEN shift into neutral that normally does it... hope it helps

fordornothing 11-19-2011 08:33 PM

i've tried it all. in nuetral, rocking back and forth etc. it just won't go. i think the POS motor is going out.

CMCA Swartzkrautheim 11-19-2011 08:48 PM

thats no good....

fordornothing 11-19-2011 08:53 PM

oh well. when i get the spare time and the parts rounded up. i'll be putting in the floor shift t- case. to bad a t- case from the OBS won't fit in there.

CMCA Swartzkrautheim 11-19-2011 08:56 PM

im sure you could make it with a lil cuttin n weldein

fordornothing 11-19-2011 09:07 PM

well i was thinking mor of the output spline on the tranny and the input spline on the t- case. i can't see them lining up between the years like that. ya know?

CMCA Swartzkrautheim 11-19-2011 09:13 PM

but if the input can be pulled from ur elec t/c and swapped u might be in like flynn...

fordornothing 11-19-2011 09:17 PM

but just comparing the two cases they look entirely different size wise. then if the yokes are the same. i don't want to tear everything apart just to figure out it won't work. i'd be better off to just find the right parts that i know will work.

CMCA Swartzkrautheim 11-19-2011 10:04 PM

yea true, im not lookin at em sbs i can only look at my sd...

fordornothing 11-20-2011 06:48 PM

I'll get it all swapped over one day. my buddy did it to his and he said it's really not that bad. just a little time consuming.
