Question on the ZF6 tranny

I have a 99 with the ZF6. I never use low. I think I've used it 4 times in the last 6 months. My question is, is it possible to get rid of low, move all the other ears down one spot and put another gear on the top end for cruising? I'm not a tranny guy so I'm hoping someone else knows. Thanks in advance.

some body has had to have tried this before...

No... Not without designing a completely different gear set up.

Throw some bigger tires on it.

well that kanda sucks. if i knew more about trannies i would try it. as for tires, i could. but i don't really like the way duallys look with big tires...

If you knew more about transmissions you probably wouldn't have asked the question because to do it the only thin you could re use is the case and maybe the output shaft. All the gears would have to be replaced to change ratios in the different gears. It would probably cost less to buy a tranny with the gearing you want than to change the gearing in the one you have.

correct me if i'm wrong but a ZF6 is a ZF6 right?

CSIPSD 10-13-2011 09:22 PM

LOL... Is this like Potato Vs Potato?

LOL well gradyc said get the tranny with the gearing you want. i'm going to assume he's not talking about any tranny and using a adapter plate.... or i'll shell out the money for the gear vendors unit.

I guess you haven't priced transmission gears lately. They are very expensive. The countershaft has one gear on it for each speed plus reverse. In most transmissions the countershaft is all one piece. To do what you want you would have to change that and all the gears on the mainshaft that mesh with it. It would most likely be less expensive to buy another transmission and adapter plate if that is necessary than to buy all the gears to change the one you have and then there is the labor to take yours apart and reassemble it with the new gear set. I am not saying it can't be done although parts availability might have some bearing on that but it is not practical or cost effective.

you're right. i haven't priced gears lately. but i know they aren't cheap. any gears aren't cheap.i believe all the gears on a 114 bethlehem pumping unit are around 11 grand. but those are much larger.
